Pillars of Eternity
Showing total mastery of the genre, Obsidian emerged from last year’s South Park: The Stick of Truth, a fantastic parody of role-playing in its own right, with the resolutely old school Pillars of Eternity. Inspired by classic computer RPGs of yesteryear, Pillars of Eternity takes tried and trusted gameplay and injects its own unique charm and character to deliver one of the finest tales of dungeons and kobolds in many a year.

Awarded a perfect 10 ten here on GD, Pillars of Eternity is equally familiar and groundbreaking. The tenets of role-playing stands on the shoulders of giants like Baldur’s Gate, but Pillars of Eternity is still very much its own beast. A grand tale of brooding ways, tavern life, and traveling the road, Pillars of Eternity is packed with incidental detail, engrossing questlines and grand fantasy.

Pillars of Eternity
It might have drawn heavy inspiration from the Infinity Engine games of yore, but Paradox Interactive craft it’s very own fantasy universe for the phenomenal Pillars of Eternity. The depth of their creation is staggering, while its custom RPG ruleset stands up to even the craziest of scenarios. Pillars of Eternity is role-playing done right, and a breath of fresh air in a year of graphics-heavy, story-light blockbusters.

Hopes were high for Pillars of Eternity, a Kickstarter-funded homage to Infinity Engine RPGs. What many didn’t expect, however, was for Pillars of Eternity to gazump Baldur’s Gate itself. Fresh from South Park success, Obsidian once more effortlessly blew the RPG gaming world away with a deep, sprawling adventure that was simultaneously nostalgic and fresh.
