So, i recorded my transition to a "proper" gaming pc a while ago and something popped up. If you read my "Finally, a gaming pc" series of blogs, you will know the specs of my system, but i would like to talk about my cpu a bit. It's an Athlon ii x3 455 unlocked to a b55 and oced to 3.45 GHz, that has the worst performing unlocked core in history. it overheats easily (it's actually hotter at stock speed than what i have it running at now) and i thought, with the summer coming and temps rising so it's performance will be rubbish due to heat issues, that i will upgrade to an fx 8300. Ryzen has launched and there is some appealing stuff from intel as well, so i am in a bit of a dillema. I can upgrade to an fx 8300 right now, since i have the money, and this will be the only expense, since i have everything else. The other way i can approach things is to wait and upgrade altogether, which is a much bigger expense, since i will need new motherboard, cpu and ram, since newer stuff doesn't support ddr3. I would like your opinion on this matter, what should i do.
The cost of the fx 8300 right now is 117 euros here in Greece, which is a good deal in my mind.
Just as a final note, at some point in the near future i plan starting my own blog about hardware and gaming, as well as post videos of random things (not sure yet). Let me know if this sounds as a good idea. I have some stuff that i would like to share as well as showcase.
*Quick update, i just noticed that there is support for ddr3 memory using new intel cpus from the 6*** series or the 7*** series, so i think this is another viable option, along with ryzen.
I noticed that this is the general feeling among the public, so i will be avoiding this purchase!
In my opinion the absolute 5 worst CPUs you could buy right now are, unlocked I3, new unlocked I5(ok if you can find a used one for cheap), FX 63xx, FX 83xx, FX 9xxx… these are all the absolute worst values for money right now….. you really should try to wait for Ryzen R5 or see what Intel has cooking up… I've a feeling the next I5s will be 6 core.
Can you clarify why getting an unlocked core i3 or an unlocked core i5 is a bad choice? For the fx series chips, i get it, they are ancient, but why is a new core i3 or core i5 a bad choice?
Because unlocked I3 and I5 are overpriced… Unlocked i3 costs nearly as much as a locked i5 and even overclocked gets beaten badly by the locked i5…. As for the unlocked i5 it just doesn't make sense to pay a premium for an i5 when a locked i7 will outperform it for not much more money….specially considering 4 threads is on its way out… 4 is the new 2, and is bare minimum now.
The way you put it, it does make sense. For the first time in years, i consider going intel for my upgrade. I will see how the prices will fall or rise with the launch of the 3 and 5 ryzen series and decide
I'd definitely wait to see how R5 and R3 are going to perform… You're really getting alot more CPU for the money with Ryzen if you ask me… it's not like the FX line with the underwhelming IPC, the IPC is definitely there with Ryzen… the clock speeds might be a little modest in comparison with Intel, but for the same price, I'll take a 6/12 Ryzen R5 over a 4/4 I5 or 4/8 I7 Any day of the week
if r3's performance is what it could be, comparable to a core i5 for a lot less, then i am definitely going r3. My budget is always super-limited, which is a pity, since i cannot configure stuff the way i want. Right now a core i5 6400 or 7400 with a ddr3 board goes for around 300 euros in total. That's what ryzen has to beat, adding the new ddr4 memory that will be needed. I expect prices to drop tho
Well if you could sell your current components that would offset a bit of the final cost.
An R3 or an R5 wouldnt cost much mora than the FX and it would be much nicer.
Also do you have a good PSU? Because the FX 8300 is a power hungry chip which is something to keep in mind.
Bottom Line is if you feel like upgrading the rest of the components go for ryzen if not just get the 8300 but i dont know how long it would last for a good gaming experience.
I have an Enermax 450 watt unit, which pretty much all i need i guess, no issues so far with my current cpu. I think that with how my cpu works right now, the fx 8300 will be a decrease in power needs from my psu (thats the issue the 4th cpu core has, tdp is at 126 watts right now as cpu-z reports). Selling is an option, but i dont think a very realistic one. And i want to upgrade my screen as well at some point, so saving money is critical.
