Pentium or i3 ?
Written by: ronweasley - 09:33 Apr-18-2017

Hey guys! Captain cool here :D

As anyone who looks at my specs can see i don't have a very good pc :( but i still manage to enjoy some old games and driving Sims :)

I am hoping to make a budget pc for about 400 green ones and I'm stuck with a dilemma

Should I buy the pentium g4560 or splurge a bit and get the i3 7100 ?

The pentium and i3 series are closer than ever with the pentium finally getting Hyperthreading the major differences seem to be the clock speed and cache. Do you think these additions are worth the 50 USD difference or will the pentium be more value for money ?

Please help.me out as i want to squeeze as many frames as possible out of my cash.

And if anyone has built a similar pc please advice me on some other components too.

With the g4560 costing so little, like 60 bucks it makes no sense right now to buy an i3. Gaming performance is almost identical

If you are NOT in a hurry, wait for ryzen 3 and get a Ryzen 3… It should be out this summer. You have to upgrade your motherboard and RAM anyway and Ryzen 3 will cost as much as an i3 7100(assuming that the i3 7100s MSRP is 130$) and will be about only 5-15% slower than an i5 7600k which costs 250$. It will also give you more time to save up more money.

Otherwise if you wanna insta-buy those awful dual cores, get the pentium g4560 as it's only 5-10% slower than the i3 7100 while costing 50$ less.

NO Ryzen APUs will NOT be out soon as far as we know, thus no Ryzen has an iGPU currently.
But the i3 7100 does have better iGPU than the g4560, but both can't play games well… it's NOT worth considering gaming on either of them. IF you only want to buy 1 or 2 new hardware it would be
better to get a rx 550 2gb when it comes for about 70-80$ and 4gb more DDR3 ram for 20-25$ than buy a new dual core albeit with hyper-threading and awful iGPU, you will get better gaming performance with your current CPU and rx 550 2gb.
