Best Multiplatform Creative Software Of 2017
Written by: tzzsmk - 15:03 Jul-13-2017

Hello everyone,

as I've been testing out Mac OS(X) but also using Windows 7 and 10, I needed to reconsider my choices for software to use, let me share most interesting software I have found, probably less-known but killer modern programs every creative person should check out (yes, they're either free, or offer fully functional time-limited trials, and purchase cost isn't crazy high), available for various Windows and Mac OS(X) versions

disclaimer - I am not affiliated to any of the publishers/creators of these softwares

IMAGE, PHOTO AND RAW EDITOR - Affinity Photo 1.5

Affinity Photo

previously available only for Mac OS(X), Photo is now available for Windows, this relatively new program is a serious competition for Adobe Photoshop and I wouldn't hesitate to say it can successfully substitute Photoshop, especially when it costs less than 50$ paid once, (which equals to roughly 2 months subscription of Adobe Photoshop Creative Cloud), trial is avaiable

(VECTOR) GRAPHICS EDITOR - Affinity Designer 1.5

Affinity Designer

another program by Serif company, Designer previously for Mac OS(X) only is also now available for Windows, being serious competition and very lucrative substitute for Adobe Illustrator, costing less than 50$ paid once (which equals to roughly 2 months subscription of Adobe Illustrator Creative Cloud), trial available

VIDEO AND FX EDITOR - HitFilm Express 2017

HitFilm Express

a very interesting program offering much more than just video editing, HitFilm is a very worthy competitor of programs such as Magix Vegas (previously Sony Vegas Pro) or Adobe Premiere Pro, but thanks to extensive effects features also an interesting alternative to Adobe After Effects, and modest audio editing capabilities may compare to Adobe Audition or Audacity,
what's really great about this program is it's for FREE, worth noting there is an FX suite (also FREE) called Ignite Express to juice up your video creativity, I'd say FREE versions are offering enough for anyone to become a usable program for very wide range of uses in any video production,
eventually for people who need even more there is a PRO version available for about 350$ (and PRO version of Ignite cost roughly 200$)

VIDEO AND COLOR GRADING EDITOR - DaVinci Resolve 14

DaVinci Resolve

this program started as primarily color grading software to accompany Blackmagic video workstations and mixers/controllers, overtime became a full-featured video editing and production program, available for FREE or paid with advanced features (high-end version has "Studio" in name, and costs around 300$)

AUDIO EDITOR AND WORKSTATION - Reaper 5

Reaper DAW

world of pro-audio offers plenty of various programs, ranging from recording software to music creation workstation with hundreds of gigabytes worth virtual instruments, one very interesting program is Reaper, developed by same person who gave us Winamp, offering 60-day trial without any feature limitations, and even after that period ends there is nothing preventing to keep using it further (except a few-second popup at launch as a reminder to purchase a license), fair to say pricing is very modest - 60$ unless yearly gross revenue exceeds 20000$, then commercial license for 225$ is needed (just to compare with similar programs, for ex. ProTools HD cost almost 1000$ a year, or Sonar Platinum roughly 500$ one-time purchase), moreover Reaper can be enhanced by additional free plugins and functional stuff, package is called SWS/S&M Extensions :)

aand that's all for now, what's YOUR favourite creative software to use, have you heard (or use) those mentioned in blog? seeking for any creative software advice? don't hesitate to leave a comment and discuss below :)

you're welcome,
one slightly annoying thing to keep in mind is you need to login using the free account, and such way HitFilm Express can be "signed in" on only one PC at once

I ran across it accidentally, immediately started to like it,
don't forget to check Ignite Express pack which enhances HitFilm (or even some other video editors) noticeably :)

Thx. I might try out some of them. Have a youtube channel, and the editing & encoding takes to long with my current apps.
Disclaimer, just made the channel less than a month ago so be nice. ;)

I myself use Adobe Premiere Pro. And editing and encoding are usually dependent on your RAM and CPU power. Ofc if the software supports GPU encoding, there's that but GPUs don't do the task as well as CPUs. The result doesn't have as good quality. 16 fast cores should really hurry the production.

"GPUs don't do the task as well as CPUs" - it depends on codec and codec settings during export, some are CPU optimized and some are GPU (CUDA or OpenCL) optimized, that said some gpus have dedicated codec decoders but not encoders support, so it's always best to do proper research if the situation doesn't require certain codec output (streaming services such as youtube may prefer some)

Nvidia 600 series and up have nvenc encoding capabilities too, but encoding options are limited to presets provided by nvidia's api.. not very customizable and quality/size ratio is not as good as cpu and gpu based encoders :(

Thank you for this, checking out HitFilm Express and Reaper. I usually do some casual video/audio for my friends, they do MIDI music and want some overlay of two screens (one at 100% and other with reduced opacity in the background). I have been using Expression Encoder and Audacity so far but they seem pretty limited (EE only outputs in WMV/WMA with the free version). This might help me to make the projects more visually attractive :D

Reaper is definitely worth checking out, only "disadvantage" is it doesn't include almost any virtual instruments, aside from that don't get fooled by unbelievably small installer size and whole DAW seemingly empty - there are TONS of features which are hidden from casual users, but it can do everything, even notation, tempo changes, rythm and tone adjustments etc.. and is incredibly reliable, we use it at work for recording days of live sessions and concerts :)
