A HORROR!!!!!
Written by: Sarmad2332 - 13:21 Feb-02-2018

I have gotten the feeling that in the past few years, the genre of horror has been revived. For while there, the quality of 'horror' had been, lets just say bad. Legendary movies like Friday the 13th and Nightmare on Elm Street were remade and boy were they BAD!!! And lets not forget the pathetic remake of Texas Chainsaw Massacre.

But of late, theses weeds have been uprooted, and in the past 3 years some super impressive works of horror have come up like It Follows, Conjuring, Ba-Ba-Dook, the latest Alien. Even in the world of games, there is Evil Within duology, Alien, SOMA, Amnesia, Outlast. All these are some impressive titles that have revitalized the art of horror.

Which brings me to my query, what would you, dear reader, consider as horror. Is horror a bloodfest like the Collection or HOSTEL or Dead Space or F.E.A.R. Or is it the use of CGI like Prometheus or Aliens. Or if you are a purist, it is the raw skill of the story being told like Conjuring 1, It Follows, Amnesia, Blair Witch Project. Or is it a combination of the above, like in Cabin the Woods, Outlast, Evil Within.

While it ultimately depends on the individual, for me its one correct answer, its the skill of the director and writer. Use of the jump scares like in Childs Play or Resident Evil is like saying if you laugh as I tickle you, then that means I'm funny. Using excessive blood and gore is not horror, its just disgusting (and as I have recently found out, a fetish as well). Horror in my personal opinion, should not mean wetting the bed, it should not mean vomiting as the Cannibals feast on the intestines. Horror should make you hesitate as you step in a room, make you sneak a peak in the mirror reflection as you wash your face, have you glancing at the back seat while you drive. Horror should make you see things, everyday things in a new, macabre light.

But again, its just my opinion. You, the reader, express via the poll or the comment what you would define as 'horror'

If you watch a TV series like House MD you will see a lot of blood and creepy looking things. I remember cringing and not looking at the screen when they intubated people. Is House a horror show? No. It is at times uncomfortable or even disgusting but it isn't scary. I think your definition of horror fits in nicely.

House MD never claimed to be a horror. Look at Walking Dead as an example. Is it "horror" because of zombies, or the blood/gore or the graphic violence? Is Tokyo Ghoul or Attack on Titan "horror"? That is what I am asking.

Can any of these blood/gore features rightly label themselves as"horror"? And would you define horror as just graphic violence? Most of the "Horror" in ur real life is not graphic, just as many movies and shows are horror w/out any violence
