Running CandC Generals Zero Hour(CD version) on windows 8.1-help needed
Written by: ExiGamer - 16:07 Mar-02-2018

Hey guys, the other pc in my home has windows 8.1(all updates) and has C&C Generals Zero Hour installed, but it can't seem to run it.

I get a  message saying that it requires administrator privileges(even though it has them and can't run). When I try to run it as an administrator, the error is gone but nothing happens(the game doesn't run).

I've tried a multiple of registry values for SecureROM, but no one seems to get it working(that was the solution according to many people for about a few hundred other older games on DVDs or CDs, like AoE,AoM,Crysis,etc.).All of this got caused by a certain windows update named KB3086255 which disables SecureROM DRM(a program like we have nowdays just for physical copies of games).

Any help would be greatly appreciated since both me and my brother are quite enthusiastic about trying a lan party. :D

(I really hope I won't have to make another blog like this one for the other copy of the game I will be installing on my win10 rig).

I've tried using these registry "fixes" from this steamcommunity forum and a few other sites.

Tried multiple combinations for compatibility, still doesn't work, unfortunately. The only progress I've made is that the loading screen actually shows up but stays there for a minute until I get the famous "Technical difficulties" error.
Got to that by messing around more with options.ini in data folder(separate from install folder) and enabling secrdv in the registry.
That happens on winXP SP2, same but without error just disappears in XP SP3.

NoCD crack is something I haven't tried yet, but I kinda hoped I wouldn't need to go there. And uninstalling certain windows updates is still an option.
Anyway, thanks for the help, at least I'm trying things and crossing them off the list. :D

try unlocking the admin account and try running it from there because a lot of useless features are disabled.
