Where the HECK ya been Scotty!?
Written by: scottyjay - 11:30 Apr-09-2018

Well, that's a good question. I've been everywhere, man. Now, I won't go crazy deep into my life, but this blog post is directed toward those who might remember me and were happy to see me finally ping off... ;)

Just for a quick recap, this was me at my peak. Man I loved this place so much.

Yep, I had it all. Gold admin badge, some people actually loved me, had a cute girlfriend, a big house and at least 3 exotic cars... Ok so the last 3 didn't quite happen the way I had planned, but the first 2 did. Here I was, being all admin-like when suddenly, a wild life appeared. I caught the life. It gave me a job, a house, a car, money and "freedom". It also gave me bills, rent, insurance, responsibilities (who knew the laundry didn't put itself in the machine, hang outside and land on your bed all by itself?). All this came at the cost of time, precious time. With this also came the prospect of making new friends, as I moved far, faarrr away from where I grew up and I inevitably lost contact with my old gang. Little did I know, young and innocent as I was, people tended not to be great friends when they're from the big city. I moved from a small country town where everyone was friendly and the whole town was on first name terms with everyone. Long story short, by the time a year had passed I had suffered through some damaging friendships and relationships. I was depressed, paranoid and had major trust issues. To top it all off, I lost my job of more than a year as my boss had decided that instead of me, he wanted some 18 year old blonde girl to be his new protege. Not even joking. He was a sick bastard.

It wasn't all doom and gloom, however. After losing my job, I took a holiday at a nice beachside resort. There I finally had some much needed rest and relaxation. Probably spent a few too many dollars on alcohol, but what the hell, I deserved it by this point. After the holiday, I left the city all together and went into the outback (rural Australia) to work on cattle stations. The sand and dust was always present but it hardly mattered to me, I was just so happy to be working with the kind of people that understood me and knew some of the things I was struggling with. The sweet solitude of country living is something that will unfortunately go much under-appreciated by the vast majority of people, but those who do experience it deserve recognition. More so to the tough, do-life-the-hard-way people that spend their entire lives out there. It's a simple life. No internet, no phone signal, no video games, no TV, no movies, no outside world. Just work, beer, steaks the size of your head, your mates and whatever fun you can invent (and boy don't I have a few stories there).

Food time for the drought-stricken cows

Me in the top of a tree after cutting down some branches for the cattle to eat

My dog with a pet pig resting under some shrubs in the 42 degree (celsius) heat. About an hour's drive from the homestead at this point

The machines were a lot of fun (yes I spent many hours operating these)

Here's a friendly scorpion, just one member of the diverse wildlife society. Also good friends with the spiders and snakes

So there's a few snippets of my outback adventures. Although I grew up on my parent's station, I decided to venture further inland for my working getaway. This is an area of land about 900,000 acres in size (3,642 square kilometres, big enough to fit all of Dallas inside, including Fort Worth, the 8th biggest city in the world). This is one station, owned by one family, operated with about 40 station hands. I was there for nearly a year. It was exactly what I needed to just get away from all the horrible people and get my head back in the game.

Which brings me a little closer to the present. Six months ago I signed on for a new house in Brisbane, and moved in 1 month later. I got a new job as a highrise building painter. I started my life all over again. This time I was going to do it differently. I stayed away from the inner city, clubs and pubs, opting instead to meet new friends through other means. I bought myself a motorbike and joined some riding groups. With that I gained a new sport, a new hobby and have made a few, but very good friends.

My baby, the Triumph Street Triple

Which brings us to now, this very moment. I've had a pretty wild ride over the last few years. I feel so old and tired, making it hard to believe I'm only in my early twenties. Because of those horrible, nasty people who I thought were my friends, and the liars who told me it really was love they had for me (exes), I went away and did something that I knew and grew up with, but in a new way and in a new place. I met some new people out there, all of whom are incredible people and most of whom were there for similar reasons as I was. Truly the greatest and most encouraging experience of my life. I learned lessons the hard way, and struggled to cope, but now at long last I have found myself in a better place.

I want to keep this short, as I don't particularly enjoy writing about myself, especially when there's a lot of people here now who are probably thinking "who the hell is this guy??". I thought this would be a nice way of giving those of you who did know me before some info on where I'm at. I never really wanted to leave this place. Being an admin on GD was one the very first things I ever achieved all by myself. It was my own little escape, where I could come and chat to some chill dudes about life and video games. Everyone here always was just so friendly.

Now that my life finally has some kind of stability I can actually find the time between work, gaming, riding and all the other weird things I do to get on here and start mingling again. I'll never be as active as I once was, sadly, but I guess it's safe to say that officially...

I'M BACK!

It always makes me so proud that this community has developed some real nostalgia for people and great friendships among our fellow GD'ers. And if GD achieves nothing else I will be truly happy from that.
I myself have made great friends here, some I miss a lot when the call of real life eventually comes. But a lot return to visit and that rocks! Some of those have really helped grow GD into what it is today and you Scotty are one of those truly brilliant gems. Thanks for returning and sharing your recent events. I really enjoyed catching up and I smiled when I saw the pic of your face again, with a few more years of experience on it, from when I last saw you.
Sorry the real world occasionally dealt you a nasty turn or two. You certainly wouldnt deserve that but as everyone says, it helps shape us and from the bad we can then benchmark when something is good.
If you would permit me, I would like to say that among the amazing people who visit GD, you became one of our core admin because anyone you interacted with quickly realised that you had a kind and caring way, despite people online being faceless. You would always act on the knowledge that you were still talking to people with feelings and helped and supported them whenever you could. And for that you have my continued respect and gratitude.
Big love and welcome home buddy
F x

Felix, the main man! You've always had an impressive way with words, and this doesn't disappoint. I'm nearly at a loss as to what I should say now, but thank you for placing such trust in me, even though I didn't feel like I deserved it at times. I love that you see the good in what people do and act to reward them for that. GD will always be special to me, far more so than any other social platform and I love that I could become a part of it all :)

It's nice. A lot less rainy than I expected. Tore me away from GD for quite a while, unfortunately, so I'll have to fix that soon. Adulting sucks.

So how do you feel now after you've beaten life?

Yo! That was a pretty inspirational read, Scotty! (and of course we remember you!)

After reading that I can safely say that I've been through most of those situations as well. Still going through some of it to be honest. But like you said, getting away and giving yourself some breathing room does do wonders. And what I find to be most important is the kind of people you surround yourself with. I thought I was a very good judge of character until those very people who I deemed good turned out to be the exact opposite. So I let them go. Was hard at first as I'm sure you can imagine…. but slowly but surely it's starting to change my life. They're still those who only want negativity and hatred for you but I'm learning to shunt them out. I'll get there :)

As for feeling old and washed out… man, I feel ya there as well. And I'm only 25. Hah! But then again, there's this renewed hope and glitter in my eyes (as I've been told) that I feel like I can really achieve the goals that I've set for myself. And that feeling… that, really is what helps me get my ass up and strut along.

I'm so happy for you, Scotty! This just just brought a smile to my face as well.

Ahhh TaheRookie, I remember when I first joined GD and you were an admin. Hard to believe that was more than 5 years ago. Man, time flies! :/

Yep, it's not always easy, especially when you can't talk to someone about your various problems because they just don't understand how it feels. I always thought I was good at judging people as well, but when people do and say things in front of you then take advantage of your good will and stab you in the back it's easy to get confused. Especially when you don't realize what these people are really like for a long time. Even my boss of more than a year deliberately took advantage of my ignorance just to one day toss me out like I was trash. I worked so damn hard for that man.

The old feeling is concerning for me at 21 years of age haha! Completely lost the will to do anything. Everything just seemed so pointless and a waste of time. I'm getting better though. Still hard to find the motivation to work hard and strive for my goals, but I've achieved a few goals on my list now and it feels really good :)

Thank you man, I always thought of this place in my absence and wondered how things were. Man it feels good to be back :D

And it must feel a bit crowded in Australia at the moment because of the Commonwealth Games going on in Gold Coast? Any plans of going there yourself? A lot of folks from India have gone in droves to Australia for it, I can tell ya that!

The more you live the more you learn. Eventually you do what you want in life, not what others want. I'm also "sure" that I will leave and never come back to my country but I guess I'll come back too, even if I dislike it. Welcome back m8.

That's certainly very true. I definitely learned that in the end, trials in life can lead you to a lot of new knowledge. Trials and pain are part of the entire learning process, plus they seem to make all the little, annoying, insignificant things go away due to the new life perspective they provide

What a ride! Hey man, welcome back. As another dude in his mid 20s I don't know what to think of all that. My life so far had been quite easier and less diverse. On one hand all those experiences, on the other all the cr@p you went through. On one hand I feel sorry for ya but on the other admiration. The latter is more prevalent I believe since you put the bad behind you ;).

Well I believe that it's something everyone will experience at least once in their life. To what degree and in which way are the only real variables. Unpleasant as my life was, I turned it into something positive, gained a whole new perspective on life and made some incredible memories to boot. Plus I convinced myself to indulge with a nice motorbike, and boy that is a load of fun!

Our internet is pure trash, I agree! Especially once you go about 600km inland. Many places out in the bush don't have any internet connection at all. Disgraceful in a wealthy nation like this

I cannot call this country developed if our internet is not like Google Fibre. NBN is trash. Shared internet? No. Still using copper instead of Optic Fibre? No.

Also everything is expensive here. Especially technology. PC hardware. A $2000 here usually only costs around $800 in the US
