Instead of helping people via my wall (mostly via whispers), I'm happier to help you guys here, so that things can be shared with the GD-world :)

Oh, eh...as said in the title: any IT related and for example 'rig question' ;) Maybe you guys doubt about your RAM's data rate? (often seen wrong RAM specifications)....

Submit A Benchmark

Welcome. From this page you can submit a personal benchmark to GD. Once approved by GD admin everyone can search for your bench results here. The more results the more we all learn.

There are lots of free benchmark tools that test parts of your PC. Select a Type in the form to the right, then select a Tool and then select a Test. You will see a weblink appear beside your selection. Click this link to get the benchmark Tool. Try NovaBench for an all in one benchmark that is only 12Mb to download.

How To

Run your choosen Benchmark Tool on your PC, using the benchmark tool's default setting. Take a screenshot displaying the benchmark score and information displaying your rig and submit that to us.

Is 2 GB VRAM really needed for GPUs at the current moment in gaming?
What extra benefit does it give?

Yes (in some cases) and no: yes, because some games offer such great graphics (GTA IV, Max Payne 3) that it might come in handy! And for example: anti-aliasing (pixel rate usage ↑ → more color information = more data = more MBs); playing on full HD? → 2,073,600 pixels = more MBs needed. So when you're running (advanced) DX11 @ 1920 x 1080 and enjoying a lot of AA and for example AF, in some cases maybe > 2GB might be better........

....no because I would recommend max. 1.5GB cards (for gaming purposes) and for example in my case: 1440 x 900 resolution and still Windows XP (DX9), max. 1024MB...but I'm still fine with my 512MB VRAM :)

That's what I can say about it! Depending on how we interpret your question, there are different answers....but remember that a lot of marketing is used; often only the amount of VRAM is mentioned in an advertisement (?)

He saviour, great to have you 'here' ;) → Assuming that you've got a fitting and nice RAM configuration (4GB DDR3 1333MT/s....), you're running DX11 and that you want a setup with a good price/quality: for example the GTX 560 (or HD 5870 1024MB) should be enough for DX11 @ 1366 x 768 when you want to max. out most of the games of today (including average AA settings + advanced DX11 use) + a 2nd generation quad core i5-2300 :) Don't forget the PSU and realize following: when you for example get SO much FPS (without using V-sync or with...when your screen's refresh rate is like 100Hz), for example because your GFX can handle a certain game very well (too well...), it's possible that you put a lot more strain on the CPU than the GPU, because the CPU needs to be @ speed to produce a lot more frames ;) Then the i5-2300 is your assurance ;)

My question: does the Radeon HD 7870 support DirectX 11.1? Also, why are the memory clocks on Kepler cards so high, without much of a return in bandwidth?

1st: the HD 7870 is a DirectX 11 level GPU which will support the most recent software version/APIs/features, sure :)
2nd: not much memory bandwidth in return? Then I think you meant the laptop versions from the 600 series? → the memory bandwidth is calculated by using the memory clock, bus width and type of RAM (multiplier); I see a lot of the laptop Keplers have a relatively low data bus width and some have GDDR3 memory ;)
alt639
00:08 Jul-03-2012

No, I meant the GTX 670 specifically. It's effective mem clock, cited here, is 6208 MHz with a 256-bit bus. Yet, it's memory bandwidth for the ref model is 192.2 GB/s.

Hey BilliTomoose, thanks for your question: the most important and specific funtion of cache memory is, that CPU request anticipation can be executed much better → Recently used data/instructions from main memory locations are stored in L1, L2 and in the meantime in most cases L3 cache; from there it can be accessed by the CPU for execution very faster (↓ latency) → total access time (in ms) = ↓ Is this clear?
Some facts:
1. L1 cache: next to the processor core and built in SRAM
2. L2 cache: close to the core and causes slowdowns due to refresh cycles (DRAM)
3. L3 cache: On the motherboard = much slower, but still much faster than system RAM/main memory
4. cache misses → L1 (no data/instructions? a miss = loss of efficiency) → L2 (No data/instructions?) → L3 (No data/instructions?) → main memory (final destination)
Enough? :)

Hey saviour, in 2017 I guess you will need 6GB for minimum settings, but what will technology do and will it maybe push the system requirements in one or another way? ;) Btw: remember that when you 'forget' about your RAM, you will for example cause your CPU to get in a state of undercapacity :/

:) Undercapacity means that you're not using the max. potential of the CPU due to for example a too small amount of bits that are transferred too slow (little RAM with a little data rate) → CPU has capacity too calculate with more data due to its clock speed, cache sizes, FSB (FSB:DRAM)/DMI/QPI etc. ;) Got it?
