Pip Gets New Rig
Written by: Pip - 13:22 Aug-04-2012

Hello everyone. It has been months since I have been searching for the right rig. I tried pre-built PCs at local stores, custom build PCs that I could order from outside or even replacing components one by one. Well, I am done searching, I found what I want.

With the help of our great community leader TeroMarsu, I have decided to build a custom PC from the scratch. The result will be a gaming-rig with exactly what I need. We considered a price-performance balance and we came up with:

CPU:  Intel Core i5-3570 3.4GHz (still subject to change, depending on special offers at time of purchase)

GPU: GeForce GTX 660 Ti (also subject to change, depending on the price difference between GeForce GTX 670)

RAM: 8GB DDR3 1600MHz (Corsair Memória PC Vengeance Performance 2 x 4 GB DDR3-1600)

HDD: Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 ST3750525AS 3,5" - 750 GB (or current HDD I have on my old desktop)

Motherboard: ASUS P8H77-V LE

PSU: Cooler Master GX 650 W

Case: Antec Dark Fleet DF-35

I would like to know everyone's opinion on this. It's about time lil' Pip gets a rig that can run something other than Sims 3 at high settings.

Submit A Benchmark

Welcome. From this page you can submit a personal benchmark to GD. Once approved by GD admin everyone can search for your bench results here. The more results the more we all learn.

There are lots of free benchmark tools that test parts of your PC. Select a Type in the form to the right, then select a Tool and then select a Test. You will see a weblink appear beside your selection. Click this link to get the benchmark Tool. Try NovaBench for an all in one benchmark that is only 12Mb to download.

How To

Run your choosen Benchmark Tool on your PC, using the benchmark tool's default setting. Take a screenshot displaying the benchmark score and information displaying your rig and submit that to us.

Pipster - I forgot to give you the heads up on something. I think your motherboard comes preloaded with VirtuMVP software. Mine did as well, and it wreaked utter havoc on my games. It's supposed to enhance the video processing of your games (or, at least the ones they claim to support), and make your frame rates smoother. It did the absolute opposite for me. Every game I played, whether it was on their list of supported games or not, had choppy frames and/or laggy mouse input. And this happened whether or not I had SLI enabled on my system. I turned off VirtuMVP in the control panel, and all of the problems I had vanished. Needless to say, I nuked that piece of garbage software from my system, and have never looked back. Be aware that if you experience weird frame jitters and/or lag, it is most likely VirtuMVP causing the problem.

Hey, that's a pretty nice set-up. If at all possible, I would try to get an SSD for your boot drive and gaming drive.
The only thing that bugs me is that the motherboard doesn't seem to be capable of SLI, which is an option you may want to leave open for yourself in the future.

Good suggestions buddy. I thought of that obviously but I have always been against SLI and Crossfire. I'd rather have a stronger single GPU than two not so strong in SLI lol
As for the SSD, it's an option depending on how much money I have left ^^
gregsuarez
22:38 Aug-16-2012

When I built my system I initially was not going to get into SLI, at least until next year. But I wanted to make sure I was ready if I did. Needless to say, I got curious and couldn't help myself. There is certainly nothing wrong with a single 660 Ti. That card should keep you sharp and happy for a long time! :-)
I am in love with SSD because of the boot and load speeds. The only downside is the relatively small storage sizes. But the prices of SSDs are plummeting, so it's always something you could add in the future if you felt like it.

I wouldn't think about "future" ugrades, because the parts won't be compatible-optimized later...just my opinion;)
and for SSDs - it's only matter of loading times and transfering files between rigs, for ex. common SATAIII drive can use about half of 1Gbit/s connection:)

05:13 Aug-18-2012

I agree, get a great rig for today, the parts you're thinking about getting tomorrow will cost a lot less when the time comes to upgrade ;)

With that rig I don't think you'll need mine. That CPU costs 1099€ and that GPU at least 500€ x 2..you payed more than 2500€ for that rig? I guess you must be extremely rich.

Learned so much after joining here,I knew about pc assembly at about 14 years as my uncle had a computer shop and I used to help when I visit........My first assembly was disassembling my old rig then putting it together back when I was 16.Now I Came to know about types of processors memory bandwidth and technical stuff only when I joined in GD.

Pip, if I may, have you considered the Corsair 600T? Its a feature-rich case that offers better styling, IMO, and better cooling than the Antec, without compromising on space. If you want, here is the Corsair. I would recommend a sound card if you listen to music a lot, DJ yourself, or just want the best possible experience you can get while gaming. That said, I use integrated audio, I believe the Realtek ALC898, and its pretty superb.

Btw: the on-board sound chip these days are (relatively) a lot better and so is the Realtek ALC887, but if you have or want to buy a decent speaker system, I would recommend a decent sound card :) But if you're not that interested in music and special fx.... ;)

integrated soundcard is good enough for common headphones/speakers;
but I must say it's 3rd time I'm returning (in warranty) my mobo because of faulty sound chip:(
**3rd time" meaning 3 different mobos...

well if you work in company (like me in recent months) with around 1000 rigs and change them about 1×/year and manufacturer gets truck full of parts, it's even far more visible of how many parts are sh!t:(
