(SOLVED/ENDED) Steam Badge Creation and Phonetics Puzzle
Written by: Mark - 19:16 Dec-04-2017
Event began: 19:00 Dec-04-2017
Duration: 4 days

Inspired by one of my previous events (check there for instructions!) another one in the same style, but then related to Steam Badges. Why not create your own, using your basic web tech skills, and get your reward... for it?

A simple example (clickable) -->

A link to your screenshot/badge may be posted in the comments section below. I'll be sure to add your result to the event entry 8-)

Not interested in this or thirsty for more? Maybe thank my comrade LimboWalker for a very interesting type of puzzle, related to Phonetics -- a branch of linguistics I wasn't really familiar with myself, but he can perfectly explain it to you:

"Have you guys ever heard of the term "phonetics"? It's the branch of linguistics that studies the sounds of human speech and their production, transmission, and reception. The symbols used to represent the speech sounds of a language have strict ways in which they are pronounced and written. My little brainteaser is about bending the rules using phonetic flexibility.

So just for the fun of it, I will challenge you to read 4 short phonetic sentences. These are a combination of letters, numbers and signs. The small letters are soft, almost soundless. Caps sound hard, just like saying the alphabet. For an extra layer of difficulty, the sentences are written without spaces between words. Using US English dialect and some imagination, can you decipher their meaning?

  1. *t2fIt&B→Os
  2. DsNdst8N2yOrf8
  3. DswRcNB1
  4. URDcOsN1

To offer some form of incentive, the bloke that solves the puzzle first will receive a Steam copy of Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War III. Everybody gets 2 chances, 2 WHISPER(S) (to me/LimboWalker), but 1 error and your response will be considered wrong."

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Okay, till so far my Coop partner who's offering a key for that 2017 RTS game, which can be considered the grand prize :) If you're creative enough, you can add a €5,- Steam Gift Card to it, which I'll be offering. We will both decide who has crafted the best 'fantasy Steam badge'; the sky's the limit.... ^^

Have fun! Freel free to post your thoughts/questions down below.

Damnit, I took a phonetics course in college, but I did terribly in it (the worst of all my linguistics courses, the others in which I did very well)… My professor for that course was very absent-minded, however…and often..well, absent from the class, entirely.. Too bad, we never got into notational systems.

Hmm, could be the core of the problem then -- not always the students to blame :D…..but I wonder how close you can come to the correct answers? Tried some and sent some to LW already? :)

TClawWolf has deciphered my little puzzle and claimed the prize. You can still have a crack at it, and win the bragging rights of being able to solve it. I will post the solution at the end of the event.
Don't forget about Mark's badge creation contest. Let that imagination run rampart! :D

Haha, I was just asking if you had received some answers, and here you go :)
Well done, TCLawWolf :) Congrats! Very doable then :)

Yeah, was about to mention the 'badge creation'-part again ^^ Enough time for that!

Cheers!

I thought my instructions were clear enough, I was even worried I've spoiled to much. I was wrong! :) Let me give you some specific examples of how some caps letters should sound/translate too:
B - be, D - de, M - em, J - jay etc.
It's just like pronouncing the US alphabet. Some letters can even have more variations, depending on the words they are forming. Here's where the term "flexibility" comes into view, being literally a play on words. You just need some imagination, and maybe a little patience. The numbers and symbols are self explanatory, no need to delve deeper on the matter.

Worked out what I think is the answer way earlier, just couldn't whisper it to ya…. If I'm right….. kinda like where you're going with the answer, lol.

I'm glad someone can figure it out. I had to take a test with made up words and I had to use English based context clues to come up with reasonable, possible pronunciations for them. I scored very well. But I'm struggling with this thing. Maybe it's the instructions I'm having issues with. Like, how is soft defined? Soft as in regards to how much the sound is stressed, therefore contributing to the volume? Or is it soft as in the hard and soft pronunciation rules? Maybe is the issue is it "is about bending the rules using phonetic flexibility" and with the autism being about strictly following rules, this puzzle ends up having compatibility issues with my brain?

Long story short I spent about twenty minutes on it and only came up with one sentence that had very horrible syntax so I presume I was doing it wrong.

just keep saying what it sounds like over and over in your head until it makes sense, it's not always going to be exactly as it sounds though, there are subtle differences

The most interesting part is also the most important part; the bending, the repetition of trying to read words….That's how I managed to do it, while not knowing much about this 'concept' either at first :)
@SogenSamurai: maybe try to create a badge! Loved your GD home page edit from back then ;-)

Also, according to this test I'm pretty much in the middle in regards to left/right brained, I scored a 58 of 100 which puts me slightly leaning right, but largely right in the middle, and I'd have to say I largely agree with that…. I'm logical almost to a fault, but also a hopeless dreamer, I'd say right in the middle pretty much suits me, lol

Hah, wasn't really asking for you to do a test, just often trying to come up with a (related) poll to spice things up, but nice :) Sounds about right then -- no pun intended!
