I'm Thinking of building a Games PC - Spec

Postby Mike14 » Wed Mar 14, 2012 2:48 pm

Hi

I have a basket of goods to build my own Gaming PC. Before i hit the purchase key i thought i would through the spec out there to see what you lot think? My main concerns are future proofing, i.e. what is coming down the line and will this handle it e.g. 64 bit gaming, how big how soon? Currently playing SKYRIM, which is noticeably poor on my current config, but hoping to gain some real improvements with my new config, see below

Feedback and suggestions welcomed?

Xigmatek Asgard Case, Xigmatek 500W PSU and 2x Bon
Intel Core i7 2600K
Xigmatek HDT-S963
AMD Radeon HD 6950 2GB
500GB S-ATAII 3.0Gb/s
8Gb Corsair 1600Mhz Vengeance (2x4gb)
Gigabyte H61M-S2P
22x DVD+_RW DL S-ATA

I would wait the 5 days until the HD7850 becomes available. It is the same price as the 6950 but better.

Also you can save a few bucks by getting a i7 2600 instead of the i7-2600k because you can't overclock with a H61 board.

+1 on what yeno said , the 7850 seems like a good bargin even in its release price.
second thing is that the system is pretty unbalanced. core i7 has no gain in performance in gaming over an i5 so i would get a core i5 2320 +H67/Z68 board for future proofing (IBY bridge support) and for extra features , another part i would change is the case and PSU, both are from unknown brand which means generic parts with low quality at best . try squeezing a 450-550W of a good brand psu in your budget and nice case with air flow for good tempetures .

I would not really recommend using a low-end h61 motherboard with an intel core i7 2600k. The first reason is that the cpu is capable of overclocking and the motherboard does not support overclocking. And secondly, if u want to get the most performance out of this cpu, you should go for a high end p67 or z68 motherboard. Also, if you want to do any overclocking, go for an aftermarket cpu heatsink. Finally, the choise between the 7850 and the 6950 is totally up to you
