Best Game of 2010

Postby Felix » Thu Feb 11, 2010 5:56 pm

This year we are going to have a rolling "Best Game of 2010" poll.

Let me explain...
  • The Poll will feature a maximum of ten games to vote on.
  • If someone suggests a game to be entered then we will add that game to the poll list so people can vote on it.
  • If it doesnt receive a vote after "some time" then it will be removed from the list.
  • If there are already ten games in our list then we will consider removing the lowest scoring game depending on the interest for the new game.
  • Each person gets 3 votes.
  • People can swap around their votes to their hearts content.
  • A game must come out at some point in 2010.
NOW THAT IS SIMPLE, RIGHT? Nothing can go wrong with that system. Some may even say, foolproof.

Nominations
Mass Effect 2 - (nominated - 11 Feb 2010)
Bad Company 2 - (nominated - 11 Feb 2010)
Civilization V - (nominated - 11 Feb 2010)
Alpha Protocol - (nominated - 12 Feb 2010)
Bioshock 2 - (nominated - 12 Feb 2010)
Stalker: Call of Pripyat - (nominated - 15 Feb 2010)
Splinter Cell: Conviction - (nominated - 16 Feb 2010)
Command & Conquer 4 - (nominated - 15 Feb 2010)
Crysis 2 - (nominated - 15 Feb 2010)
Max Payne 3 - (nominated - 15 Feb 2010)
Mafia 2 - (nominated - 15 Feb 2010)

Points of note
The list only includes one original game - Alpha Protocol
The list currently does not include any racing games like Blur or Split/Second
There are no high fantasy games in the list
If we decide to change any nominated games then the poll will be reset and voting will begin again. We will try not to do this.
If the choosing mechanism gets too mad then I will make a wise, informed gaming decision and roll a dice.

LET THE VOTING COMMENCE
Login, vote and/or help decide what should be fighting for top spot of 2010

I'd like to nominate Alpha Protocol, Bioshock 2 and Half Life 2: Episode 3. Nah, I was just pulling your leg about that last one, of course! Everyone knows it's not slated to come out until 3012.

Well would you look at that? Adding entries to the poll wipes the frickin votes. That blows the rolling poll right out of the water.
Right then, err just send me your suggestions for the games that should be in the list. As soon as there is ten entries I will build the poll and make it public.
We will then vote on those entries until someone nominates another viable entry at which point we will add that entry, the voting will begin again.
Much simpler no?

Good idea, Mr F. I'm hoping that Alan Wake will be a highlight of the year, but to be honest I can't see it topping the likes of Mass Effect 2.

We should also guess which review gets the most hits in 2010, as a sort of competition. I baggsie Farming Simulator 2009.

FIFA 10 has more hits than I've had hot dinners, despite being a shambles of a port. It'd take a brave man to bet against FIFA 11 this year.

Hmmm. The only one I can think of at the moment (cos it's the only one I've really played) is STALKER - Call of Pripyat. Just so you know, it's amazingly excellent so far.

Potential big name games coming up could include Command & Conquer 4, Supreme Commander 2, Dragon Age: Awakening, Just Cause 2, Crysis 2, Max Payne 3. Some of these could be added, no?

Also... what platforms are you including? Not that I know anything about any platform other than PC!

Well, it looks like Alan Wake's not going to go on the poll then. Stupid Remedy.

Plectrum, if one should break from the general norm when reviewing a game your review will be picked up as a benchmark for either how crap a game can possibly get OR how great a game can get. People predominantly read the extremes.
You panned Fifa and so it sticks out in the plethora of online reviews.
I am pretty sure that some sites greatly enhance their month’s stats off the back of this approach.
I know what you are thinking, but we don't do that here at GD. We prefer to get the devs to just pay us for the mark they want. Sometimes, like in the case of Fifa, we let Konami cough up

I JEST!
or do I?
No, I do. Just a little joke there.

Now who is the Man?

All good stuff there Chopps.
We havent even thought about whether expansions (add-ons, like Dragon Age Awakening) are to be included.
For now I will say expansion packs will not be added into the top ten unless you guys get upset with that descision in which case I will spinelessly reconsider.

Ok, so with the suggestions in place I will put the poll live again.

[Update] Turns out that the nominations can be switched without losing all previous votes. Great stuff! So if you feel a game not in the current line up should be in then let us know and we will consider switching it in for the lowest voted entry to date.
