Upgrading Old PC parts

Postby Epillus » Tue Jul 10, 2012 3:46 am

As you can see by the title I am updating an old computer that was bought back when vista came out, I have since then updated to win7 64bit a while ago and have wanted to get into some games that are not on consoles. I live i the United states and I am using http://www.pcpartpicker.com but will mostly buy everything from newegg.com
My PC will be used for playing games such as Minecraft, Arma 2, possibly BF3 and borderlands 2, also recording gameplay and rendering. I am not focused on making a "video editing" computer because I don't care of render times. My budget is a maximum of $600 USD. I don't mind what brand the parts but as long as they are compatible and I am mainly wanting an intel i5. I will not be overclocking due to the potential of something going wrong, and the un-need to get max speed. I would like to play games @ 1440x900 or windowed at a lower resolution. I have a link below to the parts I have in mind and some pictures of my current computer specs.

you correctly figured out what you can use from old pc as they aren't on the list ;)
I'm not sure if the rig is "balanced";
when I build rig I search items in price to final rig:
cpu: 35%
gpu: 35%
mobo: 20%
ram: 10%
as other parts I use older ones ;)
and now back to your rig:
1)cpu will be weak, go for i5-2500 or better (IvyBridge) if you can
2)cpus are sold with stock coolers that are sufficient if you won't OC
3)gpu migh be ok, I'd go for HD_850/_870 series instead of HD_770 maybe
4)ram seems to be biggest problem because I suppose you can't use 3 sticks for Intel cpu; go for 2x4GB kit
5)mobo with LGA1555 and Z77 chipset would be fine
*I hope I helped you at least a bit :)

first of all welcome to GD buddy :D
here are some parts that work perfectly fine together and they will eave you allot of room for upgrades:
CPU-http://pcpartpicker.com/part/intel-cpu-bx80623i32100 -112$
CPU cooler-http://pcpartpicker.com/part/cooler-master-cpu-cooler-rr910htx3g1-17$
MoBo-http://pcpartpicker.com/part/msi-motherboard-p67agd55b3-90$
RAM-http://pcpartpicker.com/part/gskill-memory-f310666cl9d8gbsr-44$
HDD-http://pcpartpicker.com/part/western-digital-internal-hard-drive-wd5000aakx-65$
GPU-http://pcpartpicker.com/part/msi-video-card-n560gtxm2d1gd5-145$
PSU-http://pcpartpicker.com/part/seasonic-power-supply-m12ii620bronze-90$
CASE-http://pcpartpicker.com/part/nzxt-case-s210002-45$
total cost(inc tax+shipping)-610$.

in this rig i went for parts that are a bit overkill for your current usage but it will leave you alot of headroom for upgrading in the future, if you want to pass on those options just change to a cheaper board (like an H61) and buy a much weaker PSU. the point of this parts are when you will need the extrra power you could upgrade to an IVY bridge CPU and add an additional GTX 560 to your current pc without changing either the PSU or the MoBo.
