Windows xp VS Windows 7

Postby Promos1991 » Fri Feb 24, 2012 3:57 am

I was thinking about finally upgrading to Windows 7 but I have heard that XP is still better, Windows 7 slows down games, etc. Right now the main game I'm playing is SWTOR. So far it runs pretty good no with no lag or problems with some settings on high in 1280 x 960 res.
My System specs.
Windows Xp SP3
AMD Athlon II X2 250 Processor
AMD Redeon HD 6570
Graphics Memory 1GB
2.5 GB RAM

Please get back to me on this because I don't want too buy Windows 7 and regret it.

I think you don't need it at the moment. If I look at the amount of ram and your vram, you can probably get windows 7 (x64) when you upgrade everything. Windows 7 can take up a quite a bit of ram and will leave you with little free ram for gaming. If you do not need any features of windows 7 now and mostly play that game that has no issues, why get windows 7??? I say wait till you upgrade your rig. Then get windows 7.

Just my opinion.

I agree with Reaper. Unless there is something very specific from Win 7 that you need its not needed. If you did upgrade to Win 7 you would want to get at least 4g of ram.

Why choose XP or 7, take both! At least that's how I'm set up, XP and 7 in dual-boot. I only use that setup as protection, if something goes horrendously wrong with Win7 or the HDD it's on, and it's a problem that might require format and reinstall, I can always boot in XP and deal with the problem pretty easily.

System requirements for 32-bit Win7 need only 1gig of ram, whereas the 64-bit needs 2gigs. The comment about getting 4gigs or more only really applies to the 64-bit variety since it's ram hungry. If I'm not mistaken the 64-bit version, if you have 4+ gigs, will allocate a portion to the OS and nothing else. I've got 5gigs total, but only 4.5gigs available for use. It's done to reduce conflicts for ram between the OS and other programs. With no programs running, Win7 Ultimate, and all features enabled (such as Aero styles, etc..) my ram use is 30%. If I disabled all the resource heavy features I could probably cut that to 20% or so.

Personally I always loved Windows XP, and it took me awhile to decide to switch. But in all reality Windows 7 has better features, better functionality, is very very easy to use, and there's also the issue of OS updates and support. I'm not sure if XP is still supported, but even if it is it won't be forever.

In short, Win7 is filled with awesome. But the 64-bit needs a solid system to function. The 32-bit is much less demanding, but the cost is that it's also somewhat less capable.

I'm all for moving with the times and if you look at the latest release: Sleeping Dogs, which offers no WinXP support, this is just another sign that it's time to upgrade. It won't be long before all developers leave XP behind and start looking toward supporting Windows 8 etc. Well that's my opinon.

Edit: Not that I'm planning on upgrading to Windows 8 ;)

Windows Xp just hold back GPUs with with dx10 or better. It is also winXp is less safe than win7 and it lacks optimization for newer CPUs,number of games that won't run on xp is increasing.Microsoft has recently stopped any kind of support for xp.Windows 7 has a lot more futures and it is visually much better if that is important to you.Windows 8 is meant to be for both PCs and touchscreens but it is not good for neither of those. If you have less than 3.5GB RAM you should use win7 32bit and for more than 3.5GB one should use win7 64 bit :D
That is just my opinion :)

I'd recommend you to upgrade since Windows XP won't be supported infinitely by newer games. Assassin's Creed 3, for example, won't support Windows XP as it requires DirectX 10 or higher to run. My advice: upgrade to Seven.

I have windows 7 and I haven't noticed anything really bad about it except for the long booting times, but that may just be my computer. I think windows 7 would be better because games will support it for longer since it is a newer OS.
