Resident Evil 5 is better but not THAT much better. The main difference between RE4 and RE5 are the visuals. RE4 for the PC came out with blurry visuals (which were fixed with some patches, but meh...). Resident Evil 5 features a partner and has much more replay value. Both RE4 and RE5 stories are compelling and well written but RE4 probably wins on that one, mostly because RE5's story is quite predictable.

RE4 all the way. Re5 may have been a fun game, but horror survival was completely gone. It became more of a horror action game. It's sad to me. If you compare that to the roots you would see nothing similar. The only thing RE5 surpassed RE4 in was co-op and graphics. Graphics would be a given though. I played RE4 so many freaking times. I love that game to death! Sadly though. The RE series is dead in my eyes... Just a action shooter now.

Resdient Evil 4 is one of my favorite games every. I have owned it on every console it has come out on. So my opinion is probably bias. At least I can admit that :P

Technically RE5 is an easy winner, also it follows the "more interesting" Wesker storyline unlike RE4 which is considerable as a sidetrack. I really appreciated the realistic weaponry of RE5.
BUT in horror survival aspect RE4 shows superior quality; better locations, dark and scary atmosphere (Africa in RE5 just doesn't fit).
I finished RE4 about 10 times on PC, 3 times on X360, as for RE5 about 5 times on X360.
So my vote goes to RE4 .

I must add: Chris is a badass. CHRRIIIIIS!!

Resident Evil 4 all the way. For a start it surprised everyone, taking a massive risk by completely renovating the series. The setpieces were epic and memorable - I'll never forget my arrival in the village, the first El Gigante, fighting the lake monster... and it perfectly balanced crap-your-pants horror with frantic action.

The fifth Res tried to do the same, with a different location and co-op play. Unfortunately the co-op wasn't that well implemented, and being forced to play with an AI buddy if you were going solo was just frustrating (nooo, don't load an entire clip into one freaking enemy!) As Tony already said, Africa is a poor choice for a Res game, and almost every half-decent setpiece had already been done in a previous instalment. Aside from the crazy ending, I can't remember that much about it now...

I'm pretty sure any original RE fan would choose the fourth. It took the good parts of RE and the good parts of shooters and put them together to make an awesome game. While I prefer the first three, (well, four including Code Veronica) the fourth was awesome. The only drawback was Wesker was a minor character.

The FIFTH one, however, didn't meet the expectations. Don't get me wrong, I would buy the game for mercenaries alone because it's so fun, but the puzzles are now GONE. Considering it's a Co-op game now, it's understandable. The only time you actually need to think is during 6-1, and even that was a really simple one. And don't EVEN get me started on the storyline. "So, do we shoot him?" "No, just hold your gun to him and hope he doesn't walk away." among other things.

tl;dr: I prefer 4. While 5 is fun, it's not Resident Evil anymore.
