well i had both of those probelms (diffrent times ,same pc) and i had a dead stick of ram in the pc and the press ctrl+ALT+DEL usually shows the beggining of the end in HDDs. at first he can just format drive and install a clean OS and it will give him a good month or 2 without any problems but i suggest trying to back up his data every now and then because that drive will fail on him sooner or later.
second thing is he could do a disk check on the hardd drive by plugging his drive to a diffrent computer and running his driive as slave so he could just read the files withot turning his OS on, it helped me in my dead drive but its just a temporary solution.

believe me im not smart at all,my grades show that very well :|
and to dumb it down
blue screen- i had that problem with a dead stick of ram, so i had to remove it but it sounds like it can come from the HDD too.
ctrl+alt+del in booot up, thats defintley the HDD and that problem usually shows the begining of the end of the HDD's life. it can be caused by bad sectors, scratchs, falls and every harm that has happend to the HDD.
because the HDD has moving parts in it, it becomes a very fragile piece and the most common problems are in it , to keep the hard drive alive for a little bit longer you should plug that drive to a working pc and set your pc to boot into the working drive(most boards will boot to the first and common drive so you dont even need to mess with the bios) and when youre in the OS you go to computer> you search for the partition with the OS on the second drive(usually something like F:/ or G:/), click on it with the right button>properties>tools>check now>tick the "scan and attempt repair for bad sectors">start, this will start a disk check which will mark the bad sectors on your drive and it will repair it and will give it some more time before its completley dead. ofcourse it will do it automaticlly so you dont need to do nothing :D
