Optimizing PC for Gaming

Postby Impulse » Wed Apr 25, 2012 10:44 pm

Hi. I'm not sure if I'm posting in the right place but I was hoping I could get an answer to a couple questions. I just recently (last week) installed my first new video card (gtx 560 ti) and have been enjoying my games with it (with the exception of SWTOR though its not on my end). But since I'm new to the PC gaming scene, I was wondering if there were any basic tasks I could perform to optimize my PC for gaming. Downloading anything, updating anything, running anything while gaming, etc etc. I ask this because sometimes I get a bit of fps lag in games like SWTOR and Batman: Arkham City and I was told by some people here that with my rig, I should be able to handle BF3 and High - Ultra so I shouldn't have any problems with lesser games. Any help is appreciated.

I would also like to add a second question if I may without making a new thread. I'm looking for a good gaming keyboard and mouse with a budget of $200. That includes tax and shipping if possible. Thanks!

for us to be certain on where is the location of the problem we need to have your fully detailed pc (I.e cpu, gpu, ram, psu, cooling and temps) only them we could safely assume what the problem is.
as for the keyboard and mice.
Keyboard- what are you looking in it. are you looking for mechanical buttons\touch buttons\easily press able buttons\ durability\weight \lots of configarable keys for MMORPG games and etc.
Mice- to fit a mice perfectly for the user we need to know another few details. size of your hands,in what way you hold the mouse (fingertips\claws\grip) , what features you are looking for (fast response/high dpi/lots keys/weight managment/on the fly dpi control and ETC) and on what surface you are planning to use the mouse

also if you have any brand preference (for both mouse +keyboard) i.e Razer/ SteelSeries/ Logitech or any other company.

if you can answer most of this questions we would be glad to give you a good answer for all of your questions :D

Would a dxdiag help? I'll just post what I know for now.

Intel Core i7 860 2.80GHz (8 CPUs), ~ 2.8ghz
Nvidia GeForce GTX 560 Ti 1GB (PNY Overclocked version)
500w PSU (not sure what kind but i know its got the requirements)
8GB DDR3 RAM

I do not know the "cooling" part.

I only know the temps for the video card. 32-38 idle. 45-60 C in game depending on the game and the graphic settings. Let me know what else you need and how I can obtain the info.

As for the keyboard and mouse:

Keyboard - I don't need anything that special, anything is better than what I have now. I play games like SWTOR, WoW, KoA: Reckoning, Batman: Arkham City, a couple RTS games, etc. So anything that is compatible with all types of games and has a good feel for gaming plus a good price, is fine with me.

Mouse - I don't know the size of my hand or how to specifically measure for holding one but I do know that I fully grip the moue with all 5 fingers and my palm while gaming, usually with a death grip lol. Like with the keyboard, I don't need anything flashy or expensive, just something better than the standard crap I have now.

Also, if there are good keyboards and mice that are wireless, feel free to suggest those too. Thanks!

To answer your first question, the only optimizer I know of is called GameBooster. It essentially shuts down all of the unneeded processes, but I don't know how useful it actually is.
The program is free to use, but has a premium version with more features.
Here's a link: http://www.iobit.com/gamebooster.html

It depends. On some pc's you get a lot of free ram back. But I do not notice a difference.
