Moving Case and earthing

Postby Sh3raz » Tue Jun 26, 2012 1:00 am

Hey people

I will be moving my system to a new case to facilitate my graphics card.
I was wondering if I should remove the CPU and its fan before moving the motherboard across and then reinstalling it in the new case (GPU and PSU dont matter in this respect as they are being replaced)

Also researching in earthing, some say plug it in but switch the rocker off, some say dont plug it in. Ideas and opinions please?

Thanks in advance

the motherboard is a very sensitive part so just to be safe take it off.
also if you are assembling a new pc its always nice to start fresh so install a new OS do a clean swipe in your drive check for bios updates and clean the old thermal compound from the CPU and the CPU heat sink and replace it with new one, you might feel a smoother experience and get better temps while doing that.

I think I'll save the thermal compound part as a project for another day. Moving case for the first time is quite enough :s (yeah I'm kinda paranoid, if i mess a part up im sc****d for quite a while till i can get another)

ill remember to remove the CPU, thanks very much for your assistance :)

If you are going to remove the CPU then you need to change the thermal compound. I would not take the CPU out with the cooler still attached. You can move the mother board no problem with the cpu still in.

For grounding just plug in the PSU but leave it off. Then touch the sides of it before you touch the mobo. Don't work on carpet. Touch the psu every once in a while to make sure you are clear of any charge.

OK. so final:

You say you can move the motherboard with the CPU still in. So leave the CPU and the cooler still attached to the motherboard when moving? (and this way dont remove the thermal compound?)

When you say don't work on carpet could you clarify: I was planning to work with the case on my wooden desk cleared off other stuff (speakers, phone etc. and therefore the case won't be on carpet). But in that scenario would be standing on carpet.

I also have a Antistatic wrist strap, that'll cover for touching metal case/psu right? (just in case I forget). Oh and I don't need one strap per wrist if I read correctly?

I must sound really paranoid :D got 3As in A level, so apparently i'm only clever on paper haha

well its true you should not work on carpet because of the static you get from it, i myself worked on carpet through out every pc i built i just made sure to only touch the plastic components on everything and if it doesnt has plastic part i would put an anti static bag on my hand just for the safety(a bit of a ghetto solution but it worked)
also i believe you should take your cpu cooler apart and place new thermal compound but that's just what i think.

Well it's almost certain your right over me, but I cant bring myself to add more to the task at hand and have to remember more stuff, risk forgetting other stuff
I'll do that a little later down the line after i've verified what I will have done thus far works
Is there a problem with that? something I'm not seeing? (theres been plenty of these scenarios so far haha)
