Those requirements were absolutely insane for 1998. It's like needing 64 GB of RAM; Intel Xeon E5 2690; 4 x Radeon HD 8990 deadly overclocked + 1 TB SSD space in 2013.

You do realize that Xeon CPU series are designed for servers? :P
Probably you meant these: 64 GB of RAM, Intel Core i7 3970K (or X, I don't remember) overclocked 90%, GTX 695 SLI both overclocked 90% + 1TB SSD space. :P

You're right, I'm calling BS on those recommended requirements. Pentium 4 wasn't available in 1998. Pentium II 233 was the flavour of the month back then. A quick google search revealed the following site with more accurate requirements:

If you are going to say that the graphics are bad, think like you are in 1999, and the graphics will look good or even awesome, don't try to compare the graphics to games like BF3 or Crysis.

Half Life is a Valve game, NO valve games go to #3, they just rename it without a 3, like Fallout, there is Fallout, Fallout 2, Fallout: New Vega's, None of the 3 are DLC's of eachother, they are all 3 different games with a different storyline.

The reason why it is so popular is because valvE basically reinvented FPS shooters. The graphics were FAR better than anything had seen before as COD 2 wasn't even produced until 2005. So yeah man, and for the time it was just as great as BF3 to us now or MW3 if you are into that.
