There's been a fair bit of excitement around the imminent release of Gearbox's Post-Apocalyptic Drive-and-Shooter Borderlands, but it's this year's in thing for the powers that be to remain coy regarding system requirements. However, Steam appear to have the scoop on it. Borderlands is being built from the Unreal Tournament 3 engine, optimised to run on more 'digitally challenged' machines.
We've updated the Borderlands System Requirements on the GD game page, but for those of you too lazy to click on that there link, here are the system requirements precisely as they appear on the Steam home page:
System Requirements
I have to say I'm looking forward to this. It does seem to share a similar background to Fallout 3, but I'm really digging the artistic style.
Yeah, this looks fantastic. The art is amazing. I've got real high hopes for this. High apple pie in the sky hopes, no less.
I just pray that the gameplay doesn't take a back seat to those lush graphics.
Looks like they've spent a lot of time developing the world, and even a decent chunk on those 'behind the scenes' trailers. Hopefully that humour will make it into the finished product.
If nothing else, watching the trailers gives me a hankering to go back to Fallout 3 again!
@Danny:
How does borerlands look anything like Fallout 3? One game is set after a world-wrecking nuclear apoc. In which you try to find you Dad. Borderlands is set on 'Pandora' in a clearly Sci-Fi world, and cannon. The story of which is centred about Treasure Hunters, not Wasteland survivors.
The 'Mad Max' style should not be pigeon holed into an F3 look like, as the game itself has nothing to do with a Nuclear Apoc.
But does it not even bring F3 to mind ImpPulse? It does for me.
True, it may not look as utterly ravaged as the Capital Wasteland, and it may not be set in a post-apocalyptic world, but there's something about it that makes me think of Fallout.
And that chick is HOT.
The reviews I've read about quests, raiders, gaining experience and the fact it's a first person RPG all point to Fallout 3 for me. That's not a bad thing at all - I'm still wandering the DC Wastelands myself - I'm just saying it looks like it's in the same genre of game.
A tear to my eye. Hearty discussions about juicy new titles, thats what I love to see. Welcome aboard ImpPulse.
Danny boy, keep up the good chatter.
As a side note, GD are working hard at creating a totally new members area with lots of features planned over the coming month. Should make it easier to follow game news and specific members, if you so fancy. Eventually we will add a full blown forum to vent our opinions.
Splendid, no?
Yayy, opinion venting is my favourite. Will there be a special section dedicated to complaining about Diablo III's constant delays?
But I don't want to have any arguement! All I'm trying to suggest is that if you took away all the pretty colours it would be more or less the same thing, perhaps with different combat styles. I wasn't suggesting the stories are the same, not at all.
I believe it shares similar traits with Fallout 3 (Quests, Free roaming landscape, Lawless world) You're coming from another angle, of course it's the same general genre. However, we're going to have to agree to disagree. There are more pressing issues in the world anyway...
Quests, Free roaming both fall into the RPG part of it's genre label, really. Quests especially, free roaming making it less linear.
My point is, calling the games similar and using these examples of this isn't really a connection. Lots of games have Quests, are Free Roaming, the Lawless part not to much but that's more of a device for the premise of the game to work. Having to abide by laws in F3 would make the game really dull.
So, what I'm trying to convey here is we've both stated/agreed the gameplay is different, the setting/backstory is different, each game has a different art style. One is strictly single player, where there is no present builds for skills. Borderlands to what I've seen feature talent trees, akin to an MMO - and it's designed to be multiplayer. F3 has no predetermined classes, Borderlands has 4. Do I need to list the amount of games that are open world, and have quests?
Can anyone name the first open-world game with quests? First I played was Privateer the Darkening 2, which I believe starred Mr Clive Owen. There must've been more before then, but that game stands out cos it had a British actor as the hero and not he fricking villain.
Elite? Sid Meier's Pirates?
The Borderlands website even has a Billboard in 1950's style art. They don't own post apocalypse but C'mon that quite Fallout!
As a FPS it should play completely different tho
Is Game Debate running a review of Borderlands?
Yes, we will be.
I would also like to get together with a couple of you guys, if possible, and have a run n' gun session in it then pool our co-op thoughts. Maybe even consider how it will stack up with the gargantuan co-op thats just around the corner, L4D2.
Sounds like a plan. I usually make pretty good cannon fodder - you can shoot the zombies while they're chewing on my face.
I suppose I could sacrifice myself for that if required. And on a side note I've not played Left4Dead and the new installment has made me not want to spend my hard earned cash on last years now.
It's exactly the same as Fallout 3. It's in a Wasteland. Duh!
This is on my Christmas list, but I'm hearing some negativity towards it. Including, amusingly considering the above comments, that the combat is like Fallout 3 without VATS.
So any opinions? Should I be taking it off my Chrimbo list - possibly replacing it with 'WWE Punjabi Prison Match'?
Darn double posts!
Hold tight and I'll have a review done by the start of next week. I could probably write one now but I'd like to finish it before I do so!
I like it it, its not without some flaws but it is enjoyable.
Spent a lot of time with this one & it's definitely addictive, but as Danny said, not without some issues. I'd say the combat is better compared to a FPS, in that you can't 'miss' based on a die roll - some times in Fallout, I'd be inches from an enemy and a bullet would mysteriously pass right through them. In B'lands, you hit if you aim right & it usually does the same damage.
I just loved the variety of weapons on offer and co-op is fun. Shame the ending was a bit of disappointment. It certaintly shares the 'Oh thats it?' factor with Fallout 3. (Pre-Broken Steel)
Sweet reviews guys. This one stays on my Christmas list - you can't beat a bit of Yuletide gun porn.
Oi, Felix! You were asking in the forum about getting this cheap - it's on sale on Steam for £6.something RIGHT NOW. (Until 6pm). I've updated the forum thread as well.
Point well made. I missed the opening though. :( Thanks for the heads up, all the same.
