GeForce GT 740M Review
GeForce GT 740M is a middle-class mobile graphics card based on the 28nm, Kepler architecture.
It's based on the Kepler GK107 Core and offers 384 Shader Processing Units, 32 TMUs and 16 ROPs, on a 128-bit memory interface of DDR3. The central unit runs at 810MHz (890MHz in Turbo Mode) and the memory clock operates at up to 900MHz.
Its performance is therefore similar (though slower) to the DDR3 Variant of previous GeForce GT 650M and so most modern games will run at medium or high settings. Its power consumption should be lower, thanks to the power optimizations.
This Graphics Card needs to be paired with an average Quad Core CPU and can only achieve fluent frame rates at 1366x768.

You can. Very good match. However, if you have a little bit of more money you can also go for the GT 750M.

That is not true. there are both GT 740M and GT 750M for notebook.
You might be confused with the GTX 750 which is available on PC.

How long until the 740M isn't usable any more, do you think? I'm still able to play new games on low-medium settings, sometimes with high elements.

if you overclock it with "msi afterburner" you should be able to play game atleast for 3 years but don't overclock it too much or you will lose your performance and also risk damaging your pc :D

No that processor is not good enough for last games. Go for a i5 3250m or a i7 3537U, both are good with that graphic card. And if you can use 8Gb Ram.
Hope i'm helping

At least on mine, ASUS k56C, it's not possible.

i suggest go for i5 3230m 2.6 ghz , i personally don't recommend ULV processors with 2 gb nvidia gt 740m currently you can buy lenovo ideapad z500 which will cost 50000-54000 (in indian currency)
but don't buy ulv processors!! they are carps!!

I'm planning to buy a notebook, but didn't decide yet which one would be better.
1.) i5-3230m, nVidia 740m 2GB DDR3 (128bit version)
or
2.) i7-4500u, Radeon HD 8850m 2GB DDR5 ?
will play games on 1366x768, so which one would perform better?
RAM and everything others is prett

I would get the one with the Radeon HD 8850M, it will perform slightly better in games.

If not, then I can also even overclock a little bit 8850m for even better…

Nope, the cpu won't going to bottleneck the gpu.

im using this 740m on my hp envy 17 inch, I5-3230M, 12gb ram…i see it says maximum resolution of 1366x768…but ive been using it 1600x900 since i got it…and everything runs fine…Borderlands 2 with everything maxed out, except physx (its grayed, couldnt care less)….mortal kombat komplete…Neverwinter…Marvel Heroes…what is up with that ?

0
wolcan93
09:11 Nov-22-2013

That's only the reccomended screen resolution. The GT 740M supports a max resolution of 4096x2160pixels. You was able to play that game on max settings because it's very well optimized, and the settings for you are displayed only based on the system requirements which are for a 1080p resolution. That's why it's always better to leave a comment on the specific game page, because maybe the game is well optimized and you can run it on higher settings or maybe it's really badly optimized and you can't run it at all.

yeah i know. Im playing Borderlands 2 on max settings. A couple arenas in Mortal Kombat Kombat make the fight laggy, still very playable tho. Neverwinter is running on max settings. Marvel Heroes was crap, i didnt play long. Ima try Injustice and give some feedback. Im VERY satisfied with the card (please note that I just realized I have the 64 bit version, which is supposed to not be that great) Still satisfied.

tried a couple games, all run very well with my resolution (1600x900)…and when i right click on my desktop, 1600x900 is the recommended resolution. I'm just trying to figure out why people use a lower resolution. Try it with 1600x900 and if you have problems just reduce it.
