Phenom II X4 945 Review
The Phenom II triples the shared L3 cache size from 2MB (in the original Phenom line) to 6MB, leading to benchmark performance gains as high as 30%. In another change from the original Phenom, Cool 'n Quiet applies to the processor as a whole, rather than on a per-core basis. AMD implemented this in order to address the mishandling of threads by Windows Vista, which can cause single-threaded applications to run on a core that idles at half its clock rate.
Socket AM2+ versions of the Phenom II (920, 940) lack forward-compatibility with Socket AM3. Socket AM3 versions of the Phenom II are backwards-compatible with Socket AM2+, though this is contingent on motherboard manufacturers supplying BIOS updates.

Mine came in a premade HP case and it was a 95w according to cpu-z. I didn't even know they made 125w.

I'm thinking about getting a budget entry-level desktop for casual gaming.
What do you think about this deal?

My budget is fairly generous, up to $800 for everything including the monitor and Windows. However I'm only going to game occasionally so I'm trying to spend as little as possible and avoid wasting money on high-end parts.

Go for FX-4300 and for card HD7770, it is more futureproof than phenom and 6670
what monitor do you plan? if it have res more than 1600x900, go for HD7850

Can I put both the FX-4300 and the 7770 on the motherboard and case I linked to above? I know I will need to upgrade the power supply.
Should I go for the 6/8 core processors if I'm going to use this computer for more than gaming, but not intense rendering/editing?
1600x900 monitor is fine

1. yes you can use that board but i dont like vrm without heatsink
also i recommend 9-series chipset board for FX cpus because not all older am3+ boards have stable bios update
if you plan crossfire your cards then go for 990FX boards if not you can find good 970 board like mine asus M5A97 evo
2. that depends how much you are rendering, fx-6300 cost only around 10 euro more so it was clear choice for me -causal gaming and so, but if you are rendering too much, go for 8core
3. for higher res you will need better card and hd7850/7870 or nvidia 660

you dont have to OC on day 1 but the possibility of increasing its performance when the time comes is a splendid addition.

Its not the greatest cpu for gaming, thats for sure, but it can max out any current game in combination with a good gpu.
If you have more money, get a 955 or 965.
As PapiFiveNine said, they overclock better, thus give better performance.

I have to agree with strale030. It's very good, but the 955 and 965 are better ones.
