Phenom II X4 960T Review
The Phenom II triples the shared L3 cache size from 2MB (in the original Phenom line) to 6MB, leading to benchmark performance gains as high as 30%. In another change from the original Phenom, Cool 'n Quiet applies to the processor as a whole, rather than on a per-core basis. AMD implemented this in order to address the mishandling of threads by Windows Vista, which can cause single-threaded applications to run on a core that idles at half its clock rate.
Socket AM2+ versions of the Phenom II (920, 940) lack forward-compatibility with Socket AM3. Socket AM3 versions of the Phenom II are backwards-compatible with Socket AM2+, though this is contingent on motherboard manufacturers supplying BIOS updates.

Its not that simple, every chip have its own sweet spot, you need to find it yourself

is it better to buy this and unlock it to a 6 core processor, or buy a x6 1090 or something like that

Really depends on your requirements for the sysyem. If you do video editing and 6 cores is a must, don't take the risk and just go with an X6. If you're mostly going to be gaming, an X4 is fine and the chance to get an X6 is a bonus (I went woth the 960t for this purpose.) As a heads-up, I needed an aftermarket cooler to prevent overheating once I umlocked.

Andreas414 nailed it exactly. If you really need the 6 cores get a X6 if you only really need the 4 cores (gaming) get this and see if you get lucky and get 6 cores. The reason these are sold as X4 is because something is wrong with one or both of the locked cores. Sometimes it is simply they don't hit the thermal envelopes like Andreas'2 and you need an after market cooler. Sometimes the locked cores just don't work.

Yeah, but only if you can get it nowadays. Most of the Phenom IIs are discontinued except for the 965, 955, and some of the X6s. Amazon may have some, but I don't know..

i overclocked mine to 4.4 ghz and put the voltage 1.60 but it gives me really bad fps in bf3 anyone know whats wrong?
alt639
20:34 Jun-26-2012

Dear god, 1.60 mV?? That is an overvoltage risk! You should only bump voltages by a small amount at a time! Are you watercooling or on air? Try setting the voltage to 1.35 mV or 1.4 mV and then run prime95. Try not to go over 1.45 mV, ok? This should fix your fps problem.

You're welcome :D I have a slightly higher OC than you and I'm at 1.375 mV on a CM Hyper 212+ with no stability issues. Once you adjust voltages, you should run prime95 for several hours to make sure there are no stability issues. Once you have, try out BF3 again and report back with results.

Just got this CPU a few days ago, and have been very impressed thus far. Unlocked to six cores with Gigabyte GA-78LMT-S2P mobo by simply enabling core unlocking on the Advanced BIOS settings; on 4 cores, got a 7.3 CPU rating on Windows Experience Index.

Still when the advanced clock calibration feature is available on a specific mobo (not all have it..), not all guarantee the needed stability! It's not worked out optimal in my opinion and you should always stresstest with software like Prime95 ;)

Yes sadly once you unlock the cpu the temperatures can not be read. Which I don't like since i love to see what my cpu's high and low temps are during high demanding games.

I just bought this CPU, and just OCing it by a mere 400Mghz, you get performance nearly the same as the phenom II X4 975! this CPU is a monster!
