Core i7-3820 4-Core 3.60GHz Review
Intel Core i7 is an Intel brand name for several families of desktop and laptop 64-bit x86-64 processors using the Nehalem microarchitecture that are marketed for the business and high-end consumer markets. The Core i7 brand is intended to differentiate these processors from Core i5 processors intended for the main-stream consumer market and Core i3 processors intended for the entry-level consumer market. Core i7 is a successor to the Intel Core 2 brand. The Core i7 identifier was first applied to the initial family of processors codenamed Bloomfield introduced in 2008. In 2009 the name was applied to Lynnfield and Clarksfield models. Prior to 2010, all models were quad-core processors. In 2010, the name was applied to dual-core Arrandale models, and the Gulftown Core i7-980X Extreme processor which has six hyperthreaded cores. This or 3770k?

Tough decision, but it all depends on your budget.
I would go for this just because it's cheaper-there's almost no difference with this and the 3770K.

3770k if you want to OC, if you don't want to then the 3770 is 3% worst than the 3820

Why is that exactly? I understand that the 3820 isn't completely unlocked, but it still OCs very well and the 2011 socket is nice for future upgrades. My 3820 is currently OC'd to 4.7Ghz and I could go higher, just don't really see a point in doing so at this time.

Looking at upgrading to one of these and getting a ASrock motherboard, later on new GPU etc . Whats overclocking like with it?

Semi-locked multi's and high TDP. If you want SB-E just get the 3930K, otherwise the 3770K will do just fine.

Might look at the 3930K then as i understand the "K" means unlocked in intels naming scheme. Wanting a intel 2011 socket motherboared for furture proofing thought this cpu would be a cheap option to start with and a huge step up from AMDs CPUs performance.

Are you doing more than gaming? Because otherwise the 3770k is the better option.

intel confuses me with their cpu hierarchy, i understand that i7 are the best but which ones, or are they?, im looking to upgrade my cpu next and i feel that intel is the way to go for gaming.
alt639
22:47 Jun-20-2012

They really are :D the processor on this page is one of the three best they offer. As far as gaming goes, the i5-3570K, seen here, is a great deal and it will last about 4-5 years with a little OC. i7's are for people who do things like video editing, photoshop, F@H 24/7, and other intensive stuff. The one on this page, along with the i7-3930K and 3960X are only for people that do the aforementioned tasks or need 40 PCI Express 3.0 lanes (like if they have 3 or 4 way SLI 680's). For the i5-3570K, you'll need an LGA 1155 mobo with Z77 chipset. Ask me on my profile page if you have more questions :)

What actually differentiates the i5 from the i7 series nowadays is the Hyper Threadying. HT does a tremendous job espcially while rendering graphics, videes @1080p resolutions, like you said. But It is no needed for gaming at all. What actually games do want is the the Clock and the Multi-Tasking Instructions. IMHO, Having a 4x SLI/Crossfire is useless. You will never need 4 cards for gaming. 2 Cards is enough. IF you would like to go with heavy stuff that might need the power of thatm you better change the while computer and Get a Xeon CPU + Quadro GPU.. That is my opinion, however :)
