Its true some older sandy bridge chipset, like the h61, h67 and p67 might need to have the bios flashed. Any h77 or z77 board won't though.

the i3's can power 680's and 7970's but only in single card solutions not SLI or Crossfire solutions. it'll be lucky enough to do 7870 2 way Crossfire and 660 2 way SLI at max overclock of around 3.7ghz

No, i3 can't be enough for 680/7970 it couldn't give the best out of that cards.Some faster i5 would be enough.
