Mafia 3’s launch on PC is, by all accounts, a bit of a disaster. I can’t move for clips of comedy physics fails and general brokenness. The 30 FPS frame rate cap was just the tip of the iceberg though. Aside from this it seems performance is also a huge issue, with a mighty GeForce GTX 1080 8GB needed to hit an average FPS of 60 when playing at 1080p / Very High graphics settings.

That’s almost unprecedented. It puts Mafia 3 in the illustrious crowd which includes the likes of Assassin’s Creed Unity and Rome II: Total War. The sort of crowd which sat at the back of class and flicked ink on people and then wonder why they failed.

What it does mean however is that Mafia III’s system requirements were bang on the money, assuming we take the 30 FPS cap as the original target. The recommended requirements asked for a GeForce GTX 1060, which is capable of pulling in an average frame rate of 34 FPS. Not great considering the GTX 1060 can pull in an average of 90 frames per second in GTA 5, close to 60 in The Witcher 3, and getting on for 100 FPS in DOOM, all at Ultra.

Not a great look then, but let’s see how Mafia 3 stacks up against a variety of other graphics cards. These benchmarks are performed with a 5th gen i7 CPU and 32GB DDR4 memory.

Not exactly performance befitting Mafia 3's low-key visuals is it? Anything less than a GTX 1060 and you'll need to begin dialing settings down to achieve a steady 30 frames per second. Even the GTX 970 dips below 30 at times. The cut off point here is effectively any GTX 700 series or Radeon HD 7000 series graphics card. These won't be able to achieve what you could call high frame rates and they're beginning to really slip down the pecking order..

Down at the bottom we begin to really see the effect this has on Mafia 3 though, with the GeForce GTX 750 Ti and AMD's new Radeon RX 460 squeezed out into unplayable territory. You're going to need to drop down to Low / Medium in order to get decent playable frame rates out of these two.

Mafia 3 is certainly one of the most disappointing arrivals of the year for me, particularly when you heap these performance issues on top of gameplay problems. Hopefully Hangar 13 can get all these gripes fixed with a few patches, but for now it seems most PC gamers would do well to hold fire on a purchase.
