And so we bid farewell to AMD’s Gaming Evolved app. It’s been in the offing for a little while now as AMD has moved all its applications over to its new Radeon Software Crimson Edition, but the lights have now gone out for AMD Gaming Evolved and it will no longer receive any updates. Not so much Evolved then, more Extinct.
I think I can actually hear small whoops of joy from most Radeon owners, who’ve had to endure this messy application and all the baggage it brings for last three or so years. Originally launched in 2013 to accompany the Radeon 200 series graphics card launch, AMD Gaming Evolved was Team Red’s answer to GeForce Experience. It offers game settings optimisations, automatic driver updates and game recording through Plays.TV *Shudder*.
It’s limped along for a little while now, but AMD has decided to discontinue the software for undisclosed reasons. The obvious thing seems to be that Radeon Crimson does just about everything Gaming Evolved does but better. Gaming Evolved is also based around DX11 support and has zero DX12 functionality in its current state.
“Starting September 12th 2016, AMD is no longer bundling the “AMD Gaming Evolved App” by Raptr with builds of Radeon Software,” writes AMD in a statement. “The application will still work. AMD will cease to undertake any compatibility testing, install support or general technical support for this application, nor will it be available through Radeon Software or its installer.
“Previous builds of Radeon Software that include the “AMD Gaming Evolved App” dated before September 12th 2016 will remain intact and will not be affected.”
So there you have it, a not so fond farewell to a bit of a failed initiative. How will you be giving it the send off it deserves?
