So it’s come round to that time of year again. Grab your Imperius cosplay and your Hearthstone deck, as Blizzard’s yearly BlizzCon bash is just around the corner. The full BlizzCon schedule is out now, providing some tantalising details of what we can expect from the mighty fine, probably bearded (at least in my head) folks at Blizzard, dropping a few potential hints of some Diablo goodness coming our way.
Ironically, probably the best place to look when trying to see forwards is backwards, so let’s start with what BlizzCon 2015 held for us. We were drenched in new trailers last year, with brand spanking new footage of the Warcraft movie, Starcraft II’s Legacy of the Void expansion and the World of Warcraft: Legion add-on. Meanwhile Heroes of the Storm, Blizzard’s attempt at a MOBA, got a whole lotta loving with several new characters, a new battlefield and even a new game mode. Not to be outdone, Overwatch didn’t do too badly either, itself getting three new characters and a new map revealed. And we know how that’s all turned out for Blizzard over the last six months. Quite the cake some might say and of course the League of Explorers Hearthstone expansion pack was the cherry on top.
Diablo 4 at BlizzCon 2016
So what does this mean for BlizzCon 2016? Well, given that Diablo 3 has been out of the limelight for some time now, we think that maybe an expansion could be coming our way. Complete speculation at this point, but following Diablo 3’s Twitter there have been seemingly covert hints that something might be on the way and looking at the schedule we think there might be some points they could slip it in and blow our minds. We could be looking at an all-new Diablo 3 expansion, something which Blizzard were apparently hiring for a while back, or perhaps even a full-blown Diablo 4. We can but dream.
World of Warcraft and Starcraft 2
Well we have feeling that having been so recently pampered, Warcraft and Starcraft II are likely going to take a back seat this year. Having a look over this year’s schedule we can’t be blamed for thinking this, with nothing jumping out at us as a potential release slot. However StarCraft is looking like it’s AI might have an upgrade in the pipeline which could be interesting.
Blizzard’s Best of the Rest at BlizzCon 2016
How about the other three big three in Blizzard’s stable then? Good question, ownerless voice. With Overwatch being such a popular title is seems almost certain that some new content is on the way. How much is another matter, but we’re hopeful to see some new characters at the very least. Blizzard is the sort to upset the apple cart and inject major new features at a moment’s notice though, so who knows what might crop up. On a personal level I’d love to see little mini-campaigns for each of playable characters.
Despite not hitting the heights of LoL or DOTA, Heroes of the Storm isn’t off the cards either. Hearthstone wise, if anything we’d be surprised if we didn’t see some new cards coming our way, with its seemingly never-ending popularity it’d be silly not to really. To round it all off, bringing up the rear though there’s of course the eSports aspect of BlizzCon which can always be fun to tune into.
So, there you have it, our best guess at what BlizzCon might hold this year. Obviously we could of completely missed our mark here, as with all of our predictions. Blizzard could blow us out the water and announce its desire for political superiority and their late arrival into the American presidency campaign for all we know. Might even be the better choice at this point. But as with all these things the only thing can do is sit, wait, and wonder.
