Ubisoft has published a new behind the scenes video to celebrate the 30th anniversary of one of the world’s largest game publishers. It’s all promotional fluff with a side of congratulatory back slapping, but tucked away in the opening moments are three hugely iconic Nintendo characters remade as Ubisoft’s insidious Rabbids, lending further truth to the rumours that Ubisoft is working on a Mario and Rabbids cross-over RPG for the Nintendo Switch launch.
Check it out for yourself below if you don’t believe me. At about 0:24 you can clearly see Rabbids versions of Mario, Luigi, and Toad. A bit of a strange thing to include considering Ubisoft has never touched a Nintendo-owned IP in its entire 30 years of existence.
At 1:06 you’ll seen the South Park troupe also Rabbidified, less surprising considering The Fractured But Whole is coming in early 2017.
Ultimately it’s Mario that’s caught our eye, and according to rumours Ubisoft is developing a turn-based RPG exclusive to the Switch called Mario RPG: Invasion of the Rabbids. The twist on the usual Mario RPG formula is that the Mario universe has been invaded by Ubisoft’s Rabbids character, including a Rabbid Bowser, forcing Mario and Luigi to team up with some of the invaders to get everyone back home. It sounds like a match made in the deepest darkest pits of hell on the surface, although I have a feeling it just might be a dumb enough idea to work.
We're sure to find out the truth behind this, and heaps more, during the Nintendo Switch live presentation which is due to take place on January 12th. Expect pricing, launch dates, and a first look at what games Nintendo and third parties have in the pipeline.
