With Battlefield 1 being a roaring success, you’d perhaps forgive EA for being tempted to ride it into the ground like the equine from War Horse and rinse the series for all it’s worth. As it turns out that’s not the case. At least for now. There will be no new Battlefield game in 2017, so you’ll hopefully see Battlefield 1 supported through to 2018 and potentially beyond.
Don’t go thinking that you’ll be totally without a new shooter fix in 2017 however. EA CFO Blake Jorgensen said DICE "won't have another Battlefield back for a couple of years," however "next year we'll have Battlefront, the Star Wars game."
Battlefield 1 will be getting a minimum of four premium expansion packs, each comprising four new maps and ushering in new factions, weapons and vehicles. The first of these, They Shall Not Pass, launches in March 2017 and brings with it the French faction.
As for Star Wars Battlefront 2, it’s going to be based on the new trilogy of movies. It’ll no doubt be arriving just before Star Wars: Episode VIII hits and Jar Jar Binks sensationally makes a comeback to our cinema screens. Just imagine the rage. The 2016 Battlefront is all about the original trilogy, although the upcoming Rogue One: Scarif DLC is tying in to the imminent prequel.
"We were really working with the old canvas of Star Wars, the old trilogy. We weren't using any of the new materials that came out of Episode 8 because our game actually came out slightly before the movie," Jorgensen said. "Next year we'll have the opportunity to leverage more of that content from the new movies and we think that'll make the opportunity much larger."
Jorgensen accepts that the chief criticism of Star Wars Battlefront was there just wasn’t enough of it. He says this has been taken on board and DICE is working on a more complete package this time around. Could we perhaps see a fully fledged single-player campaign? Hopefully. I suspect we’ll hear all about Star Wars Battlefront 2 just before E3 next year.
Glad to see EA skip annual outings for the Battlefield series? Can you see Star Wars Battlefront 2 righting the wrongs of its predecessor? Let us know!
