Ubisoft’s generous game giveaways throughout 2016 in celebration of its 30th anniversary are coming to a close this month with a bit of a humdinger. None other than Assassin’s Creed 3 is available to download now, for the princely sum of three skinned rabbits. Or nothing, if you aren't *clears throat* Ratonhnhaké:ton.

"Revealed at E3 2006, Assassin’s Creed puts the audience in the middle of an ancient war between two age-old factions: the Assassins, who fight to protect freedom and the Templars, who aspire to impose a New World Order," Ubisoft said. "From Italian Renaissance to the Russian Revolution, the player meets real historical heroes, takes part in events and shapes its own destiny. From one episode to the other, the creative teams have constantly added new layers of interaction and new gameplay making each world deeper and more fascinating."

At the time Assassin’s Creed III was a bit of a turning point for the series. It introduced naval combat and was perhaps the most divisive AC yet. Plenty of people hated the switch in protagonists but I thought overall the frontier was a fascinating place to explore. Hopping through the trees and stringing soldiers up was really neat.

Right now Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon is available to download for free from Uplay, but this will be switched to Assassin’s Creed III on December 7th, so make sure to check back to grab both.

Pleased with Ubisoft’s generosity this year? The full line-up of free games included some of the best titles from the Splinter Cell, Assassin’s Creed, Rayman and Far Cry franchises, along with a bona fide classic in Beyond Good & Evil. And, erm, The Crew. Yeah.
