It may still be almost three full weeks until AMD’s Ryzen 5 CPUs launch, but that doesn’t mean you can’t get your hands on one right now. A few folks over on Reddit are reporting they’ve just managed to walk into some stores and buy their Ryzen processors, with stocks filtering into stores weeks earlier than anticipated.
The Ryzen 5 CPUs aren’t due to officially launch until April 11th, so it’s unlikely you’re just going to see them sitting on store shelves. However, you may get some luck if you go into a brick and mortar store (remember them?) and actually ask for one in person.
The risk you’re taking is that we’re still over a fortnight away from reviews dropping, so if you’re planning to grab one it’s based entirely on good faith with AMD.
Whether you aim to buy one or early or not, the good news is that AMD Ryzen 5 CPU performance benchmarks are likely to leak out very soon indeed. There’s no embargo for these folks so they’re free to do what they want.
So far we can see an AMD Ryzen 1600 has been bought, but we can also expect Ryzen 5 1600X, Ryzen 5 1500X, and the Ryzen 5 1400 to all launch on April 11th. Since we last heard Ryzen 5 launch rumours the specs have changed a little, with AMD basically shifting the Base and Boost clock speeds up or down depending on the chip. Here's the latest Ryzen 5 specs:
|CPU||Core/Thread||L3 Cache||TDP||Base Clock||Boost Clock||Price|
|Ryzen 5 1600X||6/12||16MB||95W||3.6GHz||4.0GHz||$249|
|Ryzen 5 1600||6/12||16MB||65W||3.2GHz||3.6GHz||$219|
|Ryzen 5 1500X||4/8||8MB||65W||3.5GHz||3.7GHz||$189|
