Update: 2017-03-30 - Funcom has announced its supernatural MMO, The Secret World, will be making the leap to free-to-play on June 26th. The rejigged Secret World Legends will be available on Steam, offering hundreds of hours of story-based content alongside a rollout of new chapters.
Original Story: 2017-03-30 - The Secret World Being Relaunched as F2P Secret World Legends
Over the years The Secret World has been one of the best kept secrets of the MMORPG scene. Unlike most MMOs it’s entirely story-driven and set in the modern day, incorporating the supernatural and ancient myths. It’s also been supplemented by various bolt on chapters, each taking players to otherworldly new lands. Those who’ve played it usually love it, but it never really took off in a big way. Now developer Funcom has decided to relaunch The Secret World as Secret World Legends, a free-to-play title which overhauls the entire game and features over 100 hours of story content.
“Over the course of five years, The Secret World has created a truly memorable RPG universe that stands out to this day for the uniqueness of its dark setting and tone, the depth of its quest design, and the high quality of its voice acting throughout”, said Funcom CEO Rui Casais. “Secret World Legends uses that foundation to mark a new era for the game, offering a fresh start for newcomers and long-time fans alike, delivering a captivating journey that can be enjoyed entirely on your own or with friends.”
To that end, Secret World Legends features an overhauled combat system (one of the main criticisms of the original), reworked progression, and full co-operative play over a 100 hours of storytelling.
It all sounds pretty awesome, although there’s still a big question mark hanging over the free-to-play mechanics. Funcom hasn’t explained how it’s going to monetise Secret World Legends and that’s what could make it or break. In an ideal scenario we’d just be paying for additional story scenarios, but I suspect it’ll be a great deal more complicated than that.
You can sign up to join the closed beta right now, with a full launch expecting in spring of this year.
