It’s officially beta season, what with Destiny 2 and how Call of Duty: WWII’s upcoming private multiplayer beta. It’s pre-orders only (Boo! Hiss!), but Sledgehammer has at least provided us with a brand spanking new gameplay trailer to celebrate the occasion. And, well, it doesn’t disappoint. Call of Duty looks firmly back on track.
As for what you can expect from the closed beta, it’s a pretty typical lineup. There are three playable multiplayer maps (Pointe du Hoc, Ardennes and Gibraltar) and four modes (Team Deathmatch, Domination, Hardpoint and the new War mode).
“War, developed in partnership with our friends at Raven Software, is a new way to play Call of Duty Multiplayer in an immersive Allied vs. Axis fight across the war-torn village of St. Lo, France,” says Sledgehammer Games.
There’s an old adage that says ‘fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me.’ You’ve probably heard of it. Call of Duty has now fooled me for roughly the fourth time running, bringing immeasurable besmirchment onto my family’s name. But dammit, if Activision aren’t going and fooling me all over again with Call of Duty: WWII. Out of all the COD outings from the past four or five years, this looks like the one that could actually deliver.
We’ll endeavour to try and get a code for this beta and let you know if it’s up to scratch, but it seems as if this beta is going to be exclusive pre-order players on PS4 and Xbox One. The PS4 Private Beta (a far better soldier than Admiral Alpha) begins on August 25th, while Xbox One players can jump in from September 1st. There are currently no plans for a Call of Duty: WW2 PC beta, sadly.
