The results are in. You've been ranking the entire Assassin's Creed series from best to worst and the results are in. Here we have the definitive list of the best Assassin's Creed games as vote for by the GD community. Your winner, and the best starting point for players new to Assassin's Creed is...

Assassin's Creed 2! It was a close run thing though, narrowly pipping Assassin's Creed IV by just a handful of points. For those light on time, the best time to jump into Assassin's Creed looks to be the Ezio trilogy - Assassin's Creed 2, Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood and Assassin's Creed Revelations.

To get these results I simply weighted each first place vote as nine points, second was eight points, third was seven points, etc etc.

  1. Assassin's Creed 2
  2. Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag
  3. Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood
  4. Assassin's Creed: Revelations
  5. Assassin's Creed 3
  6. Assassin's Creed
  7. Assassin's Creed Syndicate
  8. Assassin's Creed Rogue
  9. Assassin's Creed Unity

One of the biggest conclusions we can draw from this is that Assassin's Creed has really fallen off the bandwagon lately. That, or not many people have played the new ones, as it's a struggle to comprehend Syndicate sitting so low based on its own merit. Regardless, Ubisoft's got its work cut out if it wants to get the series back to its glory days with Assassin's Creed Origins. I wonder where that would rank if we did this same survey next year? Get your predictions in below.

Sadly I haven't played all of them, so two haven't made the cut. It would be great if you would let me know below where you would personally place Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood and Revelations, both of which passed me by.

  1. Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag
  2. Assassin's Creed Syndicate
  3. Assassin's Creed Rogue
  4. Assassin's Creed III
  5. Assassin's Creed II
  6. Assassin's Creed Unity
  7. Assassin's Creed

Unranked

  • Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood
  • Assassin's Creed: Revelations

I won’t argue my case for all of these but suffice to say Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag was a major high point in the series for me. The naval combat was elevated from AC3, and actually island hopping was a joy. Hopping off the boat and paddling to a deserted shore never got old for me, and it was the Assassin’s Creed game that most encapsulated a feeling of adventure.

Bizarrely for a franchise called Assassin’s Creed, I’ve always found the stealth and assassinations themselves the worst aspect. This is the same publisher that brought us Splinter Cell yet it really couldn’t deliver that tight gameplay on an open-world stage. Nowhere was this more apparent than the original Assassin’s Creed. We’re fortunate the original actually shifted a fair amount of copies because it was a bad, bad game, although one that demonstrated great promise. Hugely repetitive, it wasn’t long until all I wanted to was just blast through the nine or so main targets and reach the end. This basically all boiled down to dropping on some poor sap’s head and stabbing them a bit. Thankfully, the only way was up from here.

Syndicate’s a tricky one because as an iterative game it’s not that special, but taken on its own I believe it’s one of the strongest Assassin’s Creed entries. I was never particularly enamoured with AC2, which just felt like a better version of the original. Slightly less repetitive and more responsive controls but the gameplay beats were overly familiar. Right direction, but not enough for me. Because of this, I skipped the two pseudo-sequels, Brotherhood, and Revelations.

As for why Assassin’s Creed 3 is so high, well, I absolutely adored its world. It took a long while to get going but I was happy padding through the snow. The ship combat was also refreshing, although the whole package can retrospectively be seen as the test bed for the eventual Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag, the masterpiece of the series.

Anyway, over to you now. Remember to vote in the form near the top of this and let us know your reasons below!
