While plenty of RPGs have lately revelled in dumbing down, there’s no such thing going on with Divinity: Original Sin 2 if the latest combat trailer is anything to go by. Larian Studios’ tactical RPG sequel hinges its combat on a sandbox-like approach, utilising the environment and a complex web of spells and skills to turn the tide of battle.
Switch enemy positions using teleports. Douse fire to turn it into healing steam. Utilise an abandoned catapult for long range death-dealing. Fling an oil-filled barrel onto a campfire. The choice is yours, leading to some of the most unexpectedly varied combat we’ve seen from an RPG in years.
Actually keeping up with what’s happening is quite bewildering, but Divinity: Original Sin 2’s combat is actually turn-based, providing plenty of thinking time for some of the more advanced tactics on offer.
Not long to go now either, Divinity: Original Sin 2 will be teleported out of Steam Early Access and bound for a full release on September 14th.
