Warner Bros has announced the formation of a new studio dedicated to creating games using the Harry Potter license for us muggles to play. Portkey Games has several wizarding games in the pipeline for both mobile and consoles, confirming rumours we’ve heard for a long while that WB was exploring additional uses of the Harry Potter license.
“With Portkey Games, we are thrilled to answer the fans’ requests for more games inspired by J.K. Rowling’s Wizarding World,” says David Haddad, president of Warner Bros Interactive Entertainment. “We are working with talented creators to build games that focus on player-generated stories, which will live alongside the magical universe created by J.K. Rowling.”
To be honest it’s incredibly surprising that Warner Bros hasn’t capitalised on the Harry Potter rights more than it has done. We had the movie tie-ins of course, but the games have dried up for a good few years now. The ongoing Fantastic Beasts movies sound like the perfect opportunity for Warner Bros to take advantage of, especially when considering it’s been renewed for another four movies.
The news comes after it was revealed that Pokemon GO developer Niantic is also working on an AR mobile title called Harry Potter: Wizards Unite. It sounds like it’ll be Pokemon GO in the Harry Potter universe, complete with legendary beasts and iconic characters.
Expect to see a lot more from Harry Potter in the coming years. With any luck, those rumours of a full-blown RPG prove true. The only disappointing factor is Portkey Games doesn’t make any mention of PC releases but we’re hoping to hear more about ports a little further down the line.
What Harry Potter games would you like to see? More movie tie-ins or would you prefer Portkey Games to explore the expanded universe?
