Disney has pulled the plug on online action RPG Marvel Heroes. Developer Gazillion has been closed and all of the staff have had their contracts terminated with immediate effect.

Last week Disney announced it would be shutting down Marvel Heroes on December 31st, but in a pretty ruthless decision surprised the staff with an immediate shutdown. At the time, Marvel said "We regret to inform our Marvel Heroes fans that we have ended our relationship with Gazillion Entertainment, and that the Marvel Heroes games will be shut down. We would like to sincerely thank the players who joined the Marvel Heroes community, and will provide any further updates as they become available."

In a message to Marvel Heroes official Discord channel, a Gazillion representative said “I’m super sad to communicate to all of you that Marvel Heroes ex-developer Winterthur just told us that Marvel Heroes Omega servers will close before the announced date. The new date is 11/24, that’s two days from now.”

Probably the words part about all this is that the Gazillion staff have just been let go without warning and now find themselves unceremoniously dumped the day before Thanksgiving. That’s a harsh way to go about things and it doesn’t reflect well on Disney’s gaming business.

Fans are none too pleased either; Marvel Heroes latest Omega version only launched in June, so some are asking for refunds for any microtransactions bought. Everything they’ve spent in the game is now worthless.

Best of luck to anyone caught up in this, and if you're a Marvel Heroes player I suggest you start looking at how you can claw any money you've spent back.
