Star Trek: Bridge Crew has been one of the most well-received VR games yet. While it was hard to judge though, it always seemed as if it perhaps wasn’t the commercial success that Ubisoft needed in order to justify continuing the series. Well, allay those fears, as Ubisoft has announced Star Trek: Bridge Crew - The Next Generation, a new expansion for its co-op multiplayer experience.

The Next Generation allows would-be star captains to take the helm of the Galaxy Class starship U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701-D, tasked with testing their mettle against Romulan fleets and a Borg invasion.

Ubisoft says “The Next Generation Expansion enhances the Ongoing Missions mode and offers two additional mission types, Patrol and Resistance. Patrol Mode gives players the opportunity to free roam in space, while experiencing random encounters and objectives, for endless hours of adventure on-board the U.S.S. Aegis, U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701 or the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701-D.

"In Resistance Mode, players will get the chance to face a fan-favourite villain - the unstoppable Borg. Players will evade a pursuing Borg Cube and will be tasked with completing a series of objectives before battling the Borg in a final showdown.”

If you haven’t got your mitts on a virtual reality headset yet, Ubisoft did recently update Star Trek: Bridge Crew with support for non-VR players. We suspect the lack of VR probably detracts a fair bit from the overall experience, but it does mean that just about anyone can play. The same applies to The Next Generation as well, which is also totally cross-platform. PSVR players on PS4 can play with Oculus Rift PC players and even those with Windows Mixed Reality headsets. Considering the comparatively tiny size of the VR install base, it’s a neat idea allow everybody to play together if possible.

Star Trek: Bridge Crew - The Next Generation is out on PC and PlayStation 4 from May 22nd, priced at £11.99. Ubisoft isn’t clear on the matter, but it appears as if the base game will be required in order to play the expansion.
