Kalypso Media have bought up the rights to the classic Commandos series and the other Pyro Studio titles, like Praetorians and Imperial Glory.

Do you remember what Commandos played like? One of the original isometric stealth titles, with the series dating back to its launch in the 1990's. Carefully micro-manage your squad of commandos in real-time, as they dodge through Nazi patrol paths, meticulously avoiding the sweeping green cones that represented the enemies visual spectrum.

Kalypso Media are currently looking into development studios to pair up with that can confidently bring new life to the Commandos series. We are currently calling the next Commandos game, Commandos Returns, just so we can have a point of reference for it on Game-Debate, but we will update that Commandos game name once the clever guys at Kalypso decide on something more fitting.

They have also said in their Commandos press release that they will be adding some TLC development to some of the original Commandos games to get them polished up and working on our modern PCs. So we could be playing a prettier version of Commandos Behind Enemy Lines or Commandos 3 Destination Berlin at some point over the next year or so. I also wouldnt be surprised if we saw tablet versions released on the Apple App Store and Android Play Store. Having mobile versions of Commandos on IPAD would be awesome for commuting or holidays away from our beloved PCs.

But as Kalypso Media Group havent even secured a developer for Commandos Return, we cant expect a release date anytime soon for Commandos 4. We think the next Commandos game would likely be released in 2020, while adaptations of the following existing Commandos titles could be along over the next couple of years - Commandos: Behind Enemy Lines, Commandos 2: Men of Courage, Commandos 3: Destination Berlin and Commandos: Strike Force, as well as Pyro Studios’ other titles, such as Imperial Glory and Praetorians.

Exciting stuff and congratulations to Kalypso for moving their business forward, while breathing life and hope back into a much loved series.

In the meantime if you are looking for some games that have been inspired by the Commandos isometric real time game play then give Shadow Tactics a try.
