Crysis 3 multiplayer beta is in full swing and we are running benchmarks on all sorts of systems to see what can run Crysis 3 and what settings you might be able to play comfortably on.

We will be looking at a broad cross section of graphics cards at various graphics settings, including the ancient but mighty Nvidia 8800 GTX. We even take a look at Intels onboard GPU Intel HD 4000 to see how that benchmarks against Crysis 3 Multiplayer Beta...

The first thing to mention is that Crysis 3 is only just in open beta and the purpose of the Crysis 3 beta is invariably to stabilise the game ready for the final release ina  few weeks, 22nd February 2013.

Now that we have our hands on Crysis 3 we have put a whole bunch of PC hardware through its paces, to see how it runs on different systems.

First up for the Crysis 3 benchmarking test is the awesome Nvidia 8800 GTX.

Damn, the GTX 8800 is out before it even had a chance. The problem is that Nvidia 8800 GTX is only capable of DX 10 and yet the Crysis 3 Multiplayer beta requirements state that the GPU needs a DX 11 capable graphics solution.

Okay then, will the new onboard Intel HD 4000 gpu chipset be able to run Crysis 3?

Crysis 3 Frames Per Second at screen resolution 1366*768

Generally not very good, at low settings with SMAAx1 or below it is playable, especially for sniping or similar slow classes. At high speeds or in big fights, you may well slow down though.

Crysis 3 Frames Per Second at screen resolution 1024*768

Overall, quite playable, although would still keep AA at SMx2 or below. FXAA seemed to give a consistant 1-3 FPS boost over disabling, unsure why. With FXAA and Low settings, although the FPS is only 26, it is fairly constant, firefights/fast movement don't deteriorate it much. If you really want the graphics, you can go up to High with some loss of performance, although Very high is crippling. Similarly, avoid using the SMAAx4 or MSAAx8, they have a large drop in FPS. TxAA options are not available for this graphics solution.

So thats surprising. The HD 4000 onboard graphics solution can actually just about run Crysis 3 at lowest settings and with the system hungry AA turned off and the screen resolution set to tiny screen option. Of course the thought of playing Crysis 3 like this is likely to make a lot of people wince, but not everyone has a choice.

We noticed that Crysis 3's AA options varied depending on the GPU in the machine. With selections like TxAA High simply not being there for any but the most powerful cards.

Lets bring in the big guns now to really put Crysis 3 through its graphical paces.

The final column of the crysis 3 Nvidia GTX 680 graph displays the results where we have disabled the anti-aliasing altogether.

-------------------------

Whats the difference though? Why play Crysis 3 on one graphics setting over another? Why turn up Anti-aliasing?

Lets take a look. Here are some Crysis 3 screenshots with anti-aliasing turned off. The first screenshot is very high graphics setting. The second screenshot is with low graphics setting.

Now I reckon you are squinting to see any difference. Well, you can click the images to go to larger versions of the images but even still you will be hard pressed to notice any change. As is the way nowadays. A still screenshot is not the best way of seeing the subtle differences between all the graphical bells and whistles that modern games roll out anymore.

But bare in mind that these sorts of facts also translate into - Crysis 3 still looks good even in low settings and without Anti-aliasing turned on.
