"Battlefield 4 was only announced yesterday, and already we're hearing some fascinating things from the developers.

Even though they impressed an entire audience of people (and later, the internet) with their Frostbite 3 engine, they said: "Frostbite is a tool"...

Next-Gen Needs To Be More Than Polygons Says Battlefield 4 Dev

In an interview with Eurogamer, Patrick Bach detailed their new shift in perspective, and about how they couldn't just keep making the game based around pretty graphics.

"Next-gen needs to be more than just more polygons. To us, it's like, how do we evolve the gameplay? How do we evolve the narrative? How do we evolve the things around the technology? How do we make it more Battlefield?"

The push comes at a time where Journalism is adapting to Indie games, and realising that enjoyment and graphics are completely separate; and their reviews are reflecting that.

"You don't even judge games by graphics and audio, as [journalists] did in the past. The experience is nine. You judge it on how it feels rather than what it is. You don't use a measurement to see how good something is. You taste it and ask, is this good? Yes! I like it."

Bach explains how they've attempted to make the singleplayer campaign far more like multiplayer. Mostly, they want you to have choices; there is little value in having a huge setpiece where the player can put down his controller and just watch. Instead, the player should interact with the game, and not just with Quicktime Events.

Bach is also rather adamant that making the Singleplayer was important, pointing out that although "everyone" just buys the game for the multiplayer, they have a lot of players who don't enter multiplayer, or try it and have a bad first experience. This is something else the team has built into the singleplayer, making the game almost a long tutorial for the Multiplayer, to let you get used to tactics and weapons.

The full interview is very detailed and worth reading, and can be found here.

Do you guys think this re-imagined singleplayer will be more fun? Or is the game just about blowing up your mates?
