Complete List Of AMD CrossFire GPU Combinations
Written by Jon Sutton on 05 January 2014 at 09:00

Knowing what goes with what when it comes to AMD CrossFire configurations can be a bit of a headache, so we've compiled a list of CrossFire compatible graphics cards and which other GPUs they can CrossFire with.

The advent of the new AMD Radeon R9 and R7 ranges of cards has thrown a new spanner into the mix as the naming system changes, but this should help clarify exactly what graphics cards you'll be able to CrossFire with your current AMD setup....

Of course it's important to remember that a chain is only as strong as its weakest link, so while cards like the Radeon HD 7970 and Radeon HD 7950 can in theory CrossFire, the 7970 will have to take a significant performance hit to run alongside the 7950.

So would it be better to buy an R9 270X and crossfire with my 7850 (now), or wait another year and just buy an R9 290X or something around that range?

If you're not running into any problems in terms of performance just wait as long as you can, it's always the best option :)

I'll probably wait then and buy a high end card in a year or so. I haven't run into any real issues performance wise with my 7850, but if I start to should I go for a 290x or 2x280x?(both options will cost about the same)

It depends on the game in games like Crysis 3 Battlefied 3 Sleeping Dogs u may even see 80%+ performance which is almost double the frame-rates..

Nope, a 270X is something like a 7870 so that won't work.
You can CF it with a 7950, 7970, 280 and 280X

I am thrilled you can crossfire the 7870 with the R9 270, I decided to go with the 7870 not long ago and I am delighted with it but knowing I can crossfire it with a R9 270 is certainly something to look at for the future.

tbh im not to sure how the amd cfx works, but i should asume so but the performace increase (if any) would be very little, so little it would be a waste of money

so pretty pointless then :) i had the idea to SLI my GTX690 with a GTX680 (690=2x680) so i would basically have GTX680 TRI-SLI but the performance increase would be very little and pointless and a waste of money :)

your psu has to be good quality to handle this. coincidentally i have a very similar setup with a 650w seasonic manufactured xfx psu and i really managed to overload it once already (heavily overclocked but psus are only getting worse over time ^^)

you could run into issues when using this for crossfire since it's actually a fsp psu (just like the aurum series) those have suboptimal voltage regulation and crossload capacity. but if you leave your system on stock, it should be ok.

I don't reccomend adding a second hd7990.
Since the hd7990 is already 2x 7970 in CF, a second means your gonna have 4way CF.
3 and 4 way CF have horrible scaling
