There are big releases, and there are huge releases. Ladies and gentlemen, we have just witnessed the biggest of all.
Blizzard announced 3.5 million copies of the PC RPG had been sold by its release day, and a further 1.2 million had been given away as part of a WoW promotion, all 4.7 million ready to be played when the servers came live on May 15th…
While it was always going to be a great success, nobody expected Diablo III to do quite as well as it did – least of all Blizzard. Their server issues, coupled with the never-popular decision for single player games to require connection to these same servers, led to what has become a legendary SNAFU and many gamers not being able to access the game they’d waited over a decade to play.
Nevertheless, a further 1.6 million copies sold in the first week – a respectable sales figure in its own right. Now, everyone say ‘inevitable DLC’ with me.
Meanwhile, we here at GD are looking forward to the release of Diablo IV. Any bets on when that might be? GD reckons 2020.
