The Elder Scrolls Online MMO which is due to come out in 2013 will have a main plotline which is only playable as a solo game, Zenimax recently announced.
In addition, the skill-based character system of previous games such as Skyrim and Oblivion is to be replaced by a ‘more traditional character based system’ in order to facilitate balanced PVP…
All of which is setting alarm bells ringing. Will we see the care and attention given to the single-player adventure we’ve come to expect from Bethesda and Zenimax, or, as seems to be suggested, is a mechanically normalised combat mechanic going to trump immersion and limit character options?
Until now, one of the most important selling points of the Elder Scrolls games has been the ability to do things in your own way. Is this now for the chop?
Good new in terms of playable area though – it sounds as if the world will stretch beyond Skyrim and into other, completely new areas as well.
