E3: Company of Heroes 2 Makes Use of Powerful Systems

Flame-grilled

Company of Heroes remains one of the most popular RTSes despite being six years old. Therefore, the announcement of Company of Heroes 2 has made a lot of fans very happy.

While the Company of Heroes 2 system requirements are perhaps a little way off, there are clues about the new game emerging that give us some insight as to the kind of rig that will perform well with the game. A couple of nuggets of info about the gameplay are appearing too…

Firstly, We’ve been told that Company of Heroes 2 has full Direct X 11 support, and is being developed on an all-new ‘Essence 3.0’ engine, which supports fancy gewgaws such as SSAO (Screen Space Ambient Occlusion). It looks like a top-end machine will see noticeable improvement with the new engine.

As for gameplay, foot troops will be smarter and more versatile on the Eastern Front, where the game takes place. Soldiers can vault cover and don’t end up taking cover on the wrong side, as they have been known to do in the original game. Also, with a bit of planning and luck, they might be able to disable, capture and commandeer enemy armour – a tempting proposition, because the Germans done got those purdy tanks.

But there’s a cost to being the Russians, as any student of World War 2 history will tell you. Commissars will gleefully shoot you in the back if you try to retreat, so hit-and-run tactics are unlikely to work. During the war, the Germans used their tanks to screen Russian troops from their own commanders so they could retreat – will such a complex and morally confusing tactic work in CoH2, we wonder?

if the climate are winter and cold, can the CPU didn't use any heatsink fan? and if it water cooled, the water inside the pipe will be frozen right?

The 1939/40 portion of the Russo-Finnish Winter War is one of my favourite pieces of history. One word... Sisu. How does a single man force a Russian tank column to retreat armed only with a 9mm pistol?
After the war, the Russian commander looked at how much land they'd captured and said "Just about enough land for us to bury all of our dead..."
Tero
23:34 Jun-07-2012

Yeah, Finnish Sisu gets you through anything :D
Too bad we lost Karelia to them :(

I'm in LOVE with WWII. Back in 8th grade, our teacher asked us for an essay about it, and I sucked at it, so she made the whole class laugh at me.
You should've seen her face two years later when I gave her a 450 pages story about the second world war, written by me. Got an award from "Bibliotheca Alexandrina". Sigh, good times :D
OK, back to Russians getting their a$$es kicked, there was this Finnish sniper with 550 confirmed kills, they say he's a legend, anyone's heard of him?
Tero
00:40 Jun-08-2012

Oh you mean Simo Häyhä :)
Pretty good K/D ratio :D 5 kills/day ;) Not to mention he used iron sights instead of a scope :O

Yeah Simo Häyhä is a legend :) Most confirmed sniper kills in the world + 200 submachine gun kills. He used iron sights cause if you use scope you need to raise your head little bit more which can be fatal. He also kept snow in his mouth so his breath did not condense and reveal where he was. Russians sent team of counter snipers, battalion and artillery strikes to kill him but he survived :D He was shot in the jaw by a stray bullet during combat on March 6 1940 but he was picked by Finnish soldiers and regained consciousness on the 13th.
