It looks like 'PS3 Slim' wasn't the last makeover of the console after-all. GD sniffed out, in a recent filing of documents with the US Federal Communications Commission (FCC), revelations of Sony Computer Entertainment developing a "Super Slim PS3" was made.
Launched back in Fall 2006, Playstation 3 has come a long way. From being a heavy, power-hungry, noisy yet shiny machine to a... less shiny, no-backward compatibility, lower power-consumption and a thinner piece of tech, PS3 has tried (and succeeded)in all. So what will the Super Slim PS3 bring to the table....
The FCC filing doesn't hint much but it does say; the new PS3 is based on a new 4000 series model. It's mostly-going-to predecessor was based on the 3000 series. Of course, by its name, you can say this will go on to be even slimmer. If that is the only 'improvement' implemented here, is to be seen.
GD thinks that Sony will and in all-probability; announce the new model at this year's Gamescom. Remember when Sony unveiled the PS3 Slim? Yes, at Gamescom back in 2009. With the PS3 Slim, Sony took away backward-compatibility, memory card plots, SACD support, 2 USB ports and the functionality to install another Operating System while providing features like Bravio Synch, TrueHD audio and well, going smaller.
What features will/should Sony incorporate or make-do with; is up for debate, right here.
On the flip side, what does this mean for the inevitable PS4? Why introduce a new model so late it's life-cycle? A last restless move to ship as many copies before the next-generation? Or just to improvise the current machine that is still hammering quality games one after the other? GD thinks it's all of them. What's wrong in shipping a slimmer model of a still-popular console and capitalizing on the fact that it will have a niche of it's own?
However, a third iteration on the same platform is rather, a bold move on Sony's part. Not only creating awareness, but also less production costs(for the SSPS3) and a price slash for the PS3 is what GD envisions. If it does turn out to be hoax (we wouldn't bet on that), we'll just eat a humble pie. What about you?
So PS3 holders and non-holders, will you have a look at the Super Slim PS3? Or will you save for the PS4? Or better yet, Forget about Sony's announcement and look at Rockstar's cheeky Gamescom date? Lets us know with your below.
