Bioware have announced that their highly populated massively multiplayer online RPG, Star Wars: The Old Republic, also known as SWTOR, is going to receive a free-to-play option for their players later on this Fall.

It seems that they are hoping the free-to-play model will help bolster player numbers in what is considered to be an epic MMORPG...

“Since launch we have been adding new content and refining The Old Republic at a breakneck pace based on the feedback from our fans. We believe we are in a position to help improve the service even more, not only by continuing to add new content, but also by expanding the game to many more Star Wars fans, increasing the populations on worlds and the vibrancy of the community.” Jeff Hickman, Executive Producer of Star Wars: The Old Republic said.

Free-to-play players will receive eight iconic Star Wars character class story lines, first 50 levels for free with certain restrictions to the new content and advanced player features that are unlock able via Cartel Coins, while subscription based player unrestricted access to all the features via the ongoing subscription or the redeeming a game time card.

People can still pay their $14.99 a month if they wish for the extra juicy content offerred to paying gamers, but otherwise they will be opening the F2P access portal to any and all. My only qualm with this is that as an MMO it has to balance Forcers vs non-Forcers.. Sure Forcers have been defeated (Most notably by Mandalorians & Yuuzhan Vong). They have trouble against droids & cyborgs (Droidekas, YVH's, Grievous), specific weapons (Ex, flechette or sonics), and certain armors (Ex, Cortosis, Beskar, Vonduun Crab Armor). The Force can be blind (Ex, Yuuzhan Vong & Ysalamiri) or disrupted (Ex, stun-cuffs & Embrace of Pain).
Still, average Forcer beats non-Forcer 75% of the time, and Uber-Forcer (Yoda, Mace Windu, Darth Bane, Darth Caedus, etc..) probably 99% of the time

Of course, there are some pretty uber non-Forcers as well. A few notable ones like Jango Fett, Durge (near immortal Gen'dai bounty hunter), General Grievous, and of course Boba Fett. He has at least 2-3 dozen Forcer kills to his name, he faced Mace Windu and Darth Vader, both ending in a draw, and even beat Jaina Solo in a semi-friendly lightsaber duel.
So I guess the gist of my beef is that having all classes balanced to a degree would be counter to one of the biggest and most recurring truths in the Star Wars Universe, that being Force > non-Force almost any day of the week.

I'll give it a try. I am a huge star wars fan but I was never a big fan of online games that's why I havent' bought this one. But now I can try it. Let's hope I won't become addicted to it :D
