Sleeping Dogs DLC

Square Enix, the publishers behind eagerly-awaited Hong Kong open world crime drama beat 'em up Sleeping Dogs (that enough of an introduction for them, you think?) have announced just ahead of the game's US release that there will be at least 6 months' worth of DLC.

As well as "new content packs giving players everything they need to keep enjoying the game" including "cool cars and high-speed missions", and "outlandish outfits and game-extending mission packs", there will be Day One DLC as well...

This first extra helping, the "80s-inspired Retro Triad Pack" includes "a killer old school outfit with its own player buffs and funky kung-fu van". Kung fu van? Is that a van that can do kung fu, or just a van done up in... kung fu colours? Black and yellow like Bruce Lee's jumpsuit, perhaps? Tha mind boggles.

Day one DLC tends to get some people's blood a-boiling, but it's unlikely to do much to dampen the boundless enthusiasm that's bubbling around this game at the moment. With a UK release on Friday, we're holding our breath.

Is day one DLC a massive turn-off, or a great way for studios to remain solvent when others are falling by the wayside? As usual, you're cordially invited to say your piece in the comments section!

Look at my rig, and then tell me why I am only getting 38 FPS with everything maxed out? I don't think they optimized the game for the high-res texture pack, they just opened up the textures and let you use them at your own risk.

Problem solved. Just backed down the AA to the medium setting, now I'm getting a steady 60 FPS.

Playing Devil's Advocate for a moment, why do you guys hate it? Is it really any different to a collectible card game making money as you collect all the cards, or a special edition DVD with outtakes and behind-the-scenes stuff? Or a board game, with expansion packs? Or do you hate these as well?

To me, day one DLCs remind of something in the lines of "Oh we forgot to put this in the game, here it is for some extra cash" :D

But do you really think they've forgotten to put it in? I guess not. If we assume it's a business decision, in order to make more money out of you, and you're happy with the main game (in that it feels complete without the DLC), can you just not buy it, and be happy?
Please remember I'm playing Devil's Advocate here! I want to reiterate that... :)

Tiger Woods games are the absolute worst offenders. You spend $60 for the game and a handful of courses come on the disc. Then - the same F*CKING day the game releases - another dozen courses pop up on line to download for several dollars a piece! And then, to add insult to injury, the career mode of the game cannot be completed unless you buy the extra content. I mean, seriously EA Sports, go f*ck yourselves!
THAT pisses me off, but an extra few missions or maps or weapons or outfits that trickle out a few weeks later don't really bother me that much.

Oh damn :O
Seriously?
I've only played Tiger on my old PS2... :/
And Squee: I agree, it's a decision the developers (or more likely the publisher) has made from the get-go. Add some content to players who can't get enough of the game.
If the game is good enough sure, I'll buy everything that's released for it (I have everything purchased for Gran Turismo 5 for example) BUT that still doesn't explain the day one DLCs... :S

Yeah, at the end of the day, the games buying public doesn't like Day One DLC. So as long as we all vote with our wallets, even the corporate guys (who are about as far distanced from game design as you can get) will still get the message.

Looking forward to the game, the DLC is just a way to earn some quick & easy money though, not a fan of that..
