GeForce GTX 780M Benchmarked Results - Verdict: Impressive
Written by Paulo Proenca on 11 May 2013 at 18:07

The upcoming GeForce GTX 780M has been benchmarked and the results are pretty impressive! What was expected is also confirmed: GeForce GTX 780M will come with a full Kepler GK104 GPU and therefore offers an identical core configuration to GeForce GTX 680.

Adding to that, potentially superior performance to the GeForce GTX 660 Ti...

GeForce GTX 780M Benchmarked: Results Are Impressive!

Below you will find the specification comparison of the new laptop graphics card GeForce GTX 780M, laptop graphics card predecessor, GeForce GTX 680M and the desktop GeForce GTX 660 Ti for reference.

Compare GeForce GTX 780M Vs GeForce GTX 680M

Compare GeForce GTX 780M Vs GeForce GTX 660 Ti

Not a surprise that it comes relatively underclocked. Notice, however, that GeForce GTX 780M despite having an extra SMX activated, does come higher clocked than GeForce GTX 680M which is both surprising and scary at the same time. Surprising, how NVIDIA achieved it and scary by wondering how much heat dissipation will occur, since we're talking about a TDP of 122W.

Next, we will take a look at synthetic and gaming benchmarks. All were done with a 1920x1080 resolution.

Let's start with an Alan Wake benchmark comparison between GeForce GTX 780M vs GeForce GTX 680M vs GeForce GTX 660 Ti

Alan Wake

GeForce GTX 660 Ti has the lead on Low and Medium Settings but GeForce GTX 780M ties up with it, on High Settings, using 4xAA. Impressive results, I must say. Also notice that, GeForce GTX 780M performs 30% better than GTX 680M on Low, 25% better on Medium and 20% better on High.

On to Battlefield 3 benchmark comparison between GeForce GTX 780M vs GeForce GTX 680M vs GeForce GTX 660 Ti

Battlefield 3

I would say it's impressive how the GeForce GTX 780M surpasses the desktop GeForce GTX 660 Ti on Medium Settings. I believe the results would be even more surprising, had they been benchmarked using MSAA, rather than the more forgiving AF.

Remember also that GeForce GTX 660 Ti is equipped with a relatively narrow bus-width and its higher operating memory clock does not compensate this wholly. GeForce GTX 780M has slightly more memory bandwidth. GeForce GTX 780M performs 67% better than GTX 680M on Low, 60% better on Medium and 58% better on High.

3D Mark 11 & 3D Mark Vantage (Entry)

The 3D Mark Vantage result for GeForce GTX 780M seems quite unrealistic, since it surpasses GeForce GTX 660 Ti's result by about 8% but the 3D Mark 11 (Performance Preset) gives you an fairly solid perspective of what you can expect from GeForce GTX 780M, which is more or less what GeForce GTX 660 Ti offers.

Impressed enough? GeForce GTX 780M is 30% better than GeForce GTX 680M. This may spell trouble for AMD, since the Radeon HD 8970M is only a little better than the GeForce GTX 680M (less than 10% better) and 20% worse than GeForce GTX 780M.

Needless to say, we expect the price difference to also reflect the performance difference. Notebooks with GeForce GTX 780M will likely cost much more than those that will come loaded with a Radeon HD 8970M.

It's ok it is more of a rebranding and a few new chips nothing major the 8xx series is where you would want the upgrade. I know i'm not getting the 7xx series i'm going to wait.

Why would someone buy an expensive laptop with this GPU, when you can get a laptop for less than 300$, and with the rest of the money you can build yourself a gaming desktop with a GTX 670 or 680!

Ouch that's pretty harsh. Not everyone has uses for a desktop. I myself travel for my job and can't carry a monitor and a tower to it. Plus for some people it isn't a lot of money compared to what they make. So just because you don't see a need in it or can't afford it doesn't make it a dumb thing to buy.
